Timothée Chalamet Went Through 40 Takes of Spanking Without a Double for ‘Marty Supreme’

Kevin O’Leary, known as a panelist on Shark Tank, recently appeared in the new A24 film Marty Supreme with Timothée Chalamet. A memorable scene in the movie features O’Leary playfully spanking Chalamet with a ping pong paddle, which has generated a lot of discussion.

The film features Tim O’Leary as Milton Rockwell, a rich businessman who is married to Kay Stone, a former actress played by Gwyneth Paltrow. Timothée Chalamet plays Marty Mauser, a hopeful ping-pong player who gets caught up with Kay. Marty believes Milton can help him reach the world championships in Tokyo, but there’s a catch – he has to endure something embarrassing to get the opportunity.

I read in Variety that Timothée Chalamet actually insisted on getting hit with the prop during that scene! Apparently, they had a stunt double ready to go, but he wouldn’t let anyone else take the hit for him. He didn’t want footage of someone else getting whacked being used instead of him.

Things got more challenging when the fake paddle used for the scene broke during the first attempt, so O’Leary had to switch to a real one. The filming continued for hours, with director Josh Safdie requesting around 40 takes that lasted until the early morning. O’Leary remembered Safdie telling him to swing with more force, and that he ended up hitting the other actor quite hard.

This is his part. MARTY SUPREME is now playing in theaters nationwide.

O’Leary explained that the spanking was a deeply humiliating experience for Marty. He stated, “He had angered and insulted me repeatedly, and I felt he deserved severe punishment.” O’Leary also admitted, “I never felt he truly paid enough for his actions, and I still feel resentful about it even now.”

Released on December 25th, Marty Supreme had a successful opening weekend, bringing in $17.4 million and becoming A24’s second-highest grossing debut ever. Critics have given the film positive reviews, and Timothée Chalamet is being talked about as a potential Best Actor award winner.
