‘Zootopia 2’ Just Shattered the Most Important Box Office Record Ever

I’m absolutely thrilled to share some incredible news! Disney’s Zootopia 2 has just made history! It’s officially become the highest-grossing film ever released by Walt Disney Animation Studios – it’s surpassed everything else they’ve ever made. It’s such a fantastic achievement, and I’m so happy for everyone involved!

By December 31, 2025, the movie sequel had grossed approximately $1.46 billion globally. Of that amount, about $333 million came from ticket sales in the US and Canada, and around $1.13 billion came from international sales.

These numbers pushed the film just ahead of Frozen 2, which previously held the studio record.

The movie got off to a fantastic start, earning almost $159 million in the U.S. over the Thanksgiving holiday weekend. Worldwide, it opened with over $560 million, which is a record for animated movies and one of the biggest openings ever for any film.

The film was a huge success in China, earning over $270 million during its opening weekend. It broke records by making over $100 million in a single day – a first for any Hollywood movie in that country. Globally, the film quickly surpassed $1 billion in earnings, doing so in less than three weeks after its release.

As much as I’m excited for Zootopia 2 leading the charge at Disney Animation, it’s actually not the biggest animated hit Disney has ever had. That title still belongs to Pixar’s Inside Out 2, which earned almost $1.7 billion worldwide. But if we’re talking about the absolute top-grossing animated film ever, it’s actually China’s Ne Zha 2, raking in over $2 billion globally. It’s amazing to see how popular animation is around the world!

Both viewers and critics liked the movie. It has a 91% positive rating on Rotten Tomatoes, with reviewers praising it as a smart and heartwarming adventure. They especially loved the charming relationship between the main characters, Judy Hopps and Nick Wilde, calling it one of the best duos in recent animated films, and saying Zootopia 2 is well worth watching.

The movie has received generally positive reviews, scoring 73 on Metacritic. Audiences also responded well, giving it an “A” grade from CinemaScore and demonstrating strong interest and positive word-of-mouth according to PostTrak surveys.
