Kathy Griffin Opens Up About Childhood Trauma, Calls Late Brother a ‘Pedophile’

Comedian Kathy Griffin recently revealed that her late brother, Kenneth, was a convicted sex offender in a YouTube video reflecting on the deaths of Rob and Michele Reiner. In the video, titled “Remembering Rob Reiner | Also, a Condemnation of Gun Violence,” Griffin shared her personal grief and spoke out against gun violence.

Griffin, the youngest of five siblings, explained she hadn’t discussed her brother, Kenneth, much since publishing her first memoir, Official Book Club Selection: A Memoir According to Kathy Griffin. She described him as someone struggling with a severe crack addiction, who was often violent, and likely had underlying mental health problems that were never addressed.

She described it as deeply painful to see her parents, John and Maggie, constantly trying to help Kenneth throughout his life.

The comedian stated that Kenneth’s abusive actions started when he was a teenager. He recounted that his first wife had told him Kenneth would reportedly physically assault her and even leave her outside in the cold Chicago weather.

Honestly, hearing about this case has been incredibly disturbing. One of Kenneth’s ex-girlfriends claimed he’d sexually abused two people she knew, a boy and a girl. And the pain it caused his sister, Griffin, was just… heartbreaking. She said the trauma of having a brother who did those things never goes away, that she constantly thought about the children he hurt and even wanted to kill him. She didn’t hold back, calling him a truly awful person – a predator and abuser of women and children.

Griffin stated she wouldn’t defend her brother, even when other family members attempted to minimize or overlook his abusive behavior. She explained, “The idea that family always protects each other didn’t apply to me. I didn’t care that he was my brother.”

She stated she repeatedly reported her brother to the Los Angeles Police Department, alleging he was abusing children. She estimates she made these reports about once a week, but isn’t certain if her family knows she did so.

Referring to the recent tragedy involving Reiner, Griffin explained she understood Rob and Michele’s efforts to help their son, Nick, after he was arrested following his parents’ deaths. “I didn’t want to hear anyone suggest Rob should have hired security,” Griffin said, “because I saw my own parents do everything they could to help my brother, Kenneth.”

Rob and Michele Reiner were discovered dead at their home on December 14th by their daughter, Romy Reiner, who is 28 years old. The following day, their 32-year-old son, Nick, was arrested and is currently under investigation as a suspect in their deaths.

Griffin openly discussed how experiences in her childhood, particularly growing up with abuse, continue to affect her today. She explained, “You don’t just move past something like that,” emphasizing the lasting impact her brother’s behavior had on her life.
