Mel Gibson, 69, and Rosalind Ross, 35, Call It Quits After Nearly a Decade: “It’s Sad To End This Chapter in our Lives”

The 69-year-old actor and director, and the 35-year-old screenwriter, announced they are separating. In a statement to PEOPLE, they said while they are sad to end their relationship, they are grateful for their son and committed to co-parenting.

The couple split up quietly around a year ago, but they’re still dedicated to raising their 8-year-old son, Lars, together.

Mel Gibson comes from a big family. Besides his son Lars, he has eight other children. He shares a daughter, Hannah, and six grown sons – Christian, Edward, William, Louis, Milo, and Thomas – with his former wife, Robyn Moore. He also has a 16-year-old daughter named Lucia with songwriter Oksana Grigorieva, whom he separated from in 2010.

In January 2025, Gibson and Ross experienced a devastating loss when a wildfire destroyed their home in Malibu, Los Angeles.

Gibson was working elsewhere when the event happened, but his family and pets were able to get to safety. He later shared that his biggest relief was that everyone he loved was healthy and unharmed, which was all that mattered to him.

Mel Gibson is making a sequel to his 2004 film, The Passion of the Christ, titled The Resurrection of the Christ. It will be released in two parts, beginning with the first part on Good Friday, March 26, 2027.

Mel Gibson started dating Rosalind Ross, a former equestrian champion and writer, in 2014. They had a son together in 2017 and were together for nine years before deciding to split up and focus on raising their child together.
