The 2026 New Year Honors list in Britain celebrates people from all walks of life, including well-known actors like Idris Elba and Cynthia Erivo, as well as everyday community members. Both Elba and Erivo were honored for their significant impact on arts, culture, and society.
The list features inspiring people, including a 102-year-old judo teacher, showcasing the wide range of accomplishments celebrated annually.
Idris Elba, the actor famous for shows like “The Wire,” has been knighted for his charity work. He was recognized for his efforts helping young people through his foundation, the Elba Hope Foundation.
Idris Elba and his wife, Sabrina, started a charity that works to improve education, prevent knife crime, and help people escape poverty. He said receiving the honor made him hopeful they could raise more awareness about the need for consistent, real-world support for young people, and that everyone has a role to play in guiding them away from violence.
Cynthia Erivo, known for her roles in productions like “Wicked,” has been made a Member of the British Empire (MBE) for her contributions to music and acting. Ice dancing stars Jayne Torvill and Christopher Dean were also honored, becoming a Dame and a Knight, respectively. Author and comedian Richard Osman received an Officer of the British Empire (OBE) award as well.
Paula Radcliffe, the famous marathon runner, received an OBE. Additionally, Mervyn Kersh, a 101-year-old veteran of D-Day, was awarded a British Empire Medal for his efforts teaching students about the Holocaust.
John Hearn, nicknamed “Judo Jack,” received a British Empire Medal after Guinness World Records confirmed he was the world’s oldest judo instructor. This award highlights the variety of accomplishments the British honors system – a tradition stretching back to medieval times – celebrates, including achievements in government, the arts, sports, and community service.
Twice a year, typically around New Year’s and the King’s birthday, people are recognized for their achievements and invited to receive awards. These ceremonies are held by the King or other members of the royal family.
Being knighted or made a dame is the highest honor someone can receive, letting them use “Sir” or “Dame” before their name. Other honors, like Commander (CBE), Officer (OBE), and Member (MBE), allow people to add the letters after their name to show they’ve been recognized. This year, 1,150 people were honored for all they’ve done for society.
