In a recent interview on the “Team Deakins” podcast, Kate Winslet discussed her debut film role in Peter Jackson’s 1994 movie, Heavenly Creatures. The film tells the story of two teenage girls, played by Winslet and Melanie Lynskey, and their intense, all-consuming friendship.
When discussing how she approached playing Juliet, Winslet shared that she drew on her teenage experiences, revealing she had intimate relationships with girls.
She revealed something very personal, explaining that her first romantic experiences as a teenager involved both girls and boys. She’d kissed people of both genders, but hadn’t yet fully identified with any particular preference.
Kate Winslet shared that her personal experiences gave her insight into the strong bond depicted in the film. She explained, “I was at a point in my life where I was exploring similar feelings, and I deeply connected with the intense relationship between the two women.”
I was instantly captivated by the difficult and damaging situation those characters found themselves in. Both of them were deeply insecure and fragile.
Winslet also discussed how she related to the story’s emotional core. She explained, “I didn’t fully grasp the more troubling parts of the film, but I did understand and connect with the strong, personal bonds people can create when they’re young and feeling vulnerable.”
Kate Winslet’s breakout role came with the film Heavenly Creatures. She revealed to “Team Deakins” that she’d never even read a movie script before auditioning. The film also represented a departure for director Peter Jackson, who was known for his earlier work in horror, such as Bad Taste and Dead Alive, and the darkly comedic Meet the Feebles.
Following her work in Heavenly Creatures, Kate Winslet appeared in films such as Sense and Sensibility, Jude, and Hamlet. She then rose to international stardom with the 1997 blockbuster, Titanic.
