If you haven’t seen the latest season of Stranger Things or the play The First Shadow and want to avoid spoilers, don’t read any further! We’re about to reveal what was inside the briefcase young Henry/Vecna opened in the mines – a key part of his traumatic past. If you’d prefer to remain spoiler-free, please return to our review.

The final season of Stranger Things delves into the terrifying world inside Henry/Vecna’s mind, where Max and Holly are trapped alongside him. This mental prison also holds Vecna’s own most painful memories – ones he’s too afraid to confront. Max and Holly realize that the way to escape lies in facing these traumas, including Vecna’s deepest, most personal one. Their search for an exit leads them directly into a pivotal, traumatic moment from Henry/Vecna’s past, centered around a mysterious briefcase. While the show doesn’t reveal what’s inside, the Stranger Things stage play, The First Shadow, does. Here’s what the play reveals about the contents of that briefcase.
In the second part of Stranger Things 5, Max pulls Holly away just as young Henry/Vecna is about to open a mysterious briefcase. This brings us to the central question: what’s inside that briefcase Vecna opens in the mines? The answer is revealed in Stranger Things: The First Shadow. The briefcase contains particles from the Upside Down, stolen by a Russian spy from a military base researching the Mind Flayer and the alternate dimension known as the Abyss.

As we previously discussed regarding the contents of the briefcase in Stranger Things 5, Dr. Brenner reveals a key event from Henry Creel/Vecna’s childhood during the play. He explains that Henry disappeared near a Nevada military base around his eighth birthday and was found twelve hours later near a cave with a wound on his hand, having no memory of what happened. Brenner then adds that around that same time, a Russian spy working at the base escaped and was later found dead in a cave nearby. This doctor had stolen something unusual—something “from beyond our world”—and it seems Henry/Vecna discovered this very thing when he opened the briefcase in Stranger Things 5.

The play Stranger Things: The First Shadow explains that Henry Creel’s initial exposure to the Mind Flayer happened when he opened the briefcase in the mines. This contact caused the Mind Flayer to begin physically changing him, altering his blood and turning him into something not fully human. Importantly, this altered blood was later used by Brenner to create children with special abilities, including Eleven and Kali, leveraging Henry’s transformed state to give them powers.
If Max and Holly had stayed just a little longer during the final episodes of Stranger Things Season 5, they would have likely seen something similar to what happened with Will and the Mind Flayer. The briefcase Henry/Vecna opened would have released dark particles that entered him, showing how he gained his powers from the Upside Down and began his transformation into Vecna. It would have revealed the origin of his abilities and the start of his path to becoming the villain we know.
Stranger Things 5, Volume 1 and Volume 2 are now streaming on Netflix.
