It’s not about conquering our world – Vecna’s real plan, revealed in the second part of Stranger Things 5, is to fuse the real world with the Upside Down, creating a terrifying new reality he intends to control. We now understand how he intends to do this. Interestingly, the heroes of Stranger Things 5, Volume 2, also have a plan to defeat Vecna, and it turns out they need the Upside Down just as much as he does if they want to succeed.

Vecna’s Hidden Home Is Key to His Plans Stranger Things
In the final part of Stranger Things 5, Dustin figures out that the Upside Down isn’t another dimension or Vecna’s home. It’s actually a wormhole Eleven unintentionally opened while searching for Henry Creel under Brenner’s control. Eleven originally sent One/Henry Creel to a place Dustin now calls the Abyss. Vecna lives in the Abyss (also known as Dimension X in the Stranger Things play) and only uses the Upside Down as a way to get to our world. However, Vecna doesn’t just want access to two worlds; he’s planning to use the Upside Down to build an entirely new one.
What is Vecna’s Ultimate Goal on Stranger Things?

In Stranger Things 4, Vecna brutally murdered four children. This act of violence created massive tears in the fabric of reality, connecting the terrifying Upside Down to our world. Now, he’s expanding those connections, attempting to link the Upside Down to the Abyss – his own dark realm.
Vecna doesn’t just want to take over the real world in Stranger Things. His real plan is much bigger: he wants to combine the real world with the Upside Down and create something completely new. He’s actively working to merge these two places, and his ultimate goal is to rule over this combined dimension – it’s been his plan all along.
Why Does Vecna Need Kids to Pull Off His Plan on Stranger Things 5?

In the early seasons of Stranger Things, Vecna used Will Byers to create gateways between the Upside Down and our world. He chose Will because children are easier to manipulate and amplify Vecna’s abilities, and he saw Will as particularly vulnerable. Later, in season four, Vecna opened more of these gateways with each of his four victims. Beyond simply creating rifts, Vecna now aims to merge the terrifying Abyss with our world, a much more ambitious goal. This requires immense power – far more than just opening portals or creating tunnels – and that’s why he needs to target many more children to achieve it.
It’s unclear why Vecna specifically needs twelve children for his plan in Stranger Things 5. However, the number twelve might be linked to Henry Creel, who is fascinated with and hates time. Vecna couldn’t have proceeded without Holly, suggesting all twelve kids were essential for his plan to work.
Vecna Has a Hand-like Creature Pulling the Abyss and the Real World Close Together in Stranger Things 5, Volume 2

Vecna has connected the children to a terrifying, living creature resembling a giant, tooth-filled hand, as seen in Stranger Things. This creature seems to be a direct link to the Upside Down. While Stranger Things hasn’t explained what this creature is, it’s clearly incredibly powerful and frightening. Interestingly, “The Hand of Vecna” is a well-known, immensely powerful, and evil artifact from Dungeons & Dragons. This magical hand grants its owner abilities like inflicting instant death, causing sleep, slowing enemies, and teleportation – all of which fit with Vecna’s plans. It’s unclear whether the creature on Stranger Things is actually connected to this artifact, or if it’s simply an Easter egg for fans.

In Stranger Things 4, Nancy described seeing a huge creature with a wide-open mouth during a vision Vecna showed her of what’s to come.
If Vecna succeeds, he intends to merge the chaotic Abyss with our world, which would obliterate both in the creation of something entirely new. However, the heroes have devised a plan to permanently stop him.
What is the Party’s Plan to Defeat Vecna in the Stranger Things Series Finale?

Now that the group fully understands the Upside Down, where the missing children have been taken, and Vecna’s overall goal, they’ve developed a plan to rescue everyone and save their world. Here’s a breakdown of how our heroes intend to defeat Vecna in Stranger Things Season 5, Volume 2.
Eleven can’t mentally reach Vecna while he’s trapped in the Abyss, which is where he is now. He’s connected to a monstrous, tentacled hand that’s also holding twelve children. These kids have vines forced down their throats, and Vecna is using them to boost his power. For Eleven to connect with his mind, she needs to get physically close. However, the group can’t just fly into the Abyss. Even with a helicopter, they wouldn’t be able to fit through the openings between dimensions – the helicopter’s blades are too large.
Steve’s “Beanstalk” Plan Will Allow Eleven to Get Close Enough to Get Into Vecna’s Mind and Stop Him From Fulfilling His Goal
Instead of a direct attack, the group plans to use the radio tower as a way to reach Vecna and stop him on Stranger Things. Steve had the idea to climb the tower, which extends into the Upside Down, hoping it will connect with Vecna’s dimension, the Abyss. Vecna is trying to merge his world with ours using the Upside Down as a bridge. The Party bravely entered the Upside Down fully prepared, intending to climb the tower and, when it reaches the Abyss, allow Eleven to enter Vecna’s mind and finally defeat him on Stranger Things.

Brenner’s Bath Will Amplify Eleven’s Powers, Hopefully Enough for Her to Defeat Vecna
In the upcoming battle against Vecna on Stranger Things, Eleven needs to significantly boost her powers. The plan involves using the sensory deprivation chamber—the same one from Brenner’s lab. Surprisingly, it still exists in the Upside Down, frozen in time from when Eleven created it on November 6, 1983. She originally connected with Vecna while inside, and intends to use it again for their final showdown. However, there’s a problem: the chamber is in the Upside Down, where there’s no water, and the group didn’t appear to bring any with them. This could create a serious challenge!
Eleven will have significant help in her final showdown with Vecna on Stranger Things. Max, who has spent nearly two years inside Vecna’s mind, will guide her. Kali/Eight will join them, and Will will also be there, using his connection to the Hive Mind. Because Will has shared his true self with his friends and been accepted, Vecna can no longer exploit his fears of abandonment. While these four confront Vecna mentally in the Stranger Things season 5 finale, the rest of the group will likely battle the monsters Vecna controls in the Upside Down.
In addition to facing Vecna, the group on Stranger Things may have to contend with another threat.
What Problems Could the Party Face During Its Final Battle With Vecna on Stranger Things?

Even after discovering Vecna’s horrific actions at the MAC-Z facility, Dr. Kay remains completely determined to locate Eleven. Her only goal is to revive Brenner’s program, and she requires Eleven’s blood to do so. Kay mistakenly dismissed the danger Vecna presents and instead instructed Akers to find Eleven. Akers then realized Eleven was heading to the Upside Down and ordered his team to pursue her.
The group faces a tough challenge: they might have to battle both Vecna and the military to keep Eleven safe while she’s in her isolation tank. Even if the soldiers don’t capture Eleven, simply causing a distraction could give Vecna the advantage he needs to win. However, Akers, who previously doubted Kay’s choices, could surprisingly become a helper. If he understands the true danger, the soldiers might actually join the fight and help defeat Vecna – especially if they remember to bring flamethrowers.
It might also help if the military brings some bombs.
The Party Plans to Defeat Vecna AND to Destroy the Upside Down in the Stranger Things Series Finale

Simply defeating Vecna and saving Holly and the kids isn’t enough to ensure everyone’s safety on Stranger Things. As long as the Upside Down remains, other monsters – even the Mind Flayer – could use it to return to Hawkins and threaten our world. The only way to truly protect everything is to close the connection between dimensions by destroying the Upside Down itself, which is exactly what the group intends to do.
Once the group defeats Vecna, they’ll return home. Before they do, they plan to destroy the machine that’s keeping the Upside Down in existence. Without it, the Upside Down will collapse, and everything connected to it will be destroyed. This will permanently close the door between worlds, ensuring no creatures from the Upside Down can ever reach our world again, effectively ending the threat in Stranger Things.
Unless someone with Eleven’s abilities creates a new connection, Kali is determined to make sure that never occurs.
Why Does Kali Want Her and Eleven to Die with the Upside Down?
Kali thinks the only way to truly stop the events set in motion by Henry Creel is for both her and Eleven to die. As long as they remain alive – especially Eleven – someone like Dr. Kay, or another doctor taking her place, will eventually find Eleven. This will lead to the people Eleven cares about being hurt, and Brenner’s program will start all over again. Eleven’s blood will be used to create another person with powers like hers, and that person will ultimately open another gateway to the Upside Down.

Kali believes that once Vecna is defeated, the group should remain in the Upside Down, finally breaking the cycle of events at the cost of their lives. Eleven appears ready to accept this fate, but Hopper is determined to prevent it.
The biggest question is whether Kali will let Eleven die, or if Hopper will manage to save her. But before any of that matters, the Party has a much bigger problem: they need to stop Vecna from destroying two worlds as he tries to create a new one. Their plan to defeat him – a risky one involving a sort of ‘beanstalk’ approach – has to work.
The final season of Stranger Things is now available on Netflix. Volumes 1 and 2 are streaming now, and the concluding volume, titled either Volume 3 or The Finale, will be released on December 31st at 5 PM Pacific Time / 8 PM Eastern Time.
