Following his Oscar wins for Oppenheimer, director Christopher Nolan has released the first trailer for The Odyssey. This new film is a grand retelling of the classic Greek story about Odysseus, portrayed by Matt Damon, and his long journey home after the Trojan War. Anne Hathaway plays his wife, Penelope, and the cast also includes stars like Tom Holland, Robert Pattinson, Lupita Nyong’o, Zendaya, and Charlize Theron.

The project moved forward rapidly. Nolan started the script in March 2024 and had a deal with Universal Pictures in place by October. Actors were confirmed from late 2024 into early 2025, and filming took place between February and August.

Filming for the movie happened in several international locations, like Morocco, Greece, Italy, Scotland, Iceland, and Western Sahara. It’s Nolan’s most costly project to date, with a budget of around $250 million, and is uniquely filmed entirely on large-format IMAX 70mm film.

The Odyssey is scheduled to hit theaters in the U.S. on July 17, 2026.
