Sony’s new action comedy, Anaconda, starring Jack Black and Paul Rudd, is facing early criticism. Reviews are in, and initial reactions haven’t been positive, potentially causing trouble for the film before it’s even released.
According to Rotten Tomatoes, the film currently holds a 35 percent score based on 43 reviews.
The movie ‘Anaconda’ is getting poor reviews, with many critics believing it doesn’t quite deliver on its promising idea and talented actors. Despite being released on December 25th, these negative reactions could be a significant problem for the film’s success.

Directed by Tom Gormican, who also co-wrote the script with Kevin Etten, this film is a funny, self-aware take on the 1997 movie Anaconda. It centers around four friends who jokingly decide to recreate the film in the Amazon rainforest, but their playful adventure turns into a terrifying struggle for survival when they encounter a massive, real snake.
I was really hoping this movie would be something special, but honestly, most critics seem a little disappointed. One reviewer, Zach Pope, pointed out it tries to be as clever and self-aware as Tropic Thunder, poking fun at the way movies are made. He did say there were a few funny moments, but ultimately felt like it didn’t fully commit to its own ideas. He gave it a 2 out of 5, which pretty much sums up how I’m feeling about it now.

Jeremy Jahns didn’t like the film much at all, stating he wouldn’t even remember it. Mike Massie of Gone With The Twins gave it a very low score of 3 out of 10, describing it as a poorly made and misleading attempt to combine horror and comedy.
Many other reviewers shared similar opinions. Dionar Hidalgo called it a self-aware remake that wasn’t very funny, even with Jack Black and Paul Rudd starring, criticizing its weak characters, uninspired humor, and lack of genuine scares. One review likened the movie to a beloved comedy, but ultimately found it lacked substance, describing it as enjoyable and heartwarming, but ultimately forgettable.
The film features Steve Zahn, Thandiwe Newton, Daniela Melchior, and Selton Mello, alongside a special appearance by Ice Cube, reprising his connection to the original Anaconda by playing himself.
Initial reactions to the film, gathered from Rotten Tomatoes and various critics, aren’t very positive. While audiences will ultimately decide how they feel, current reviews indicate ‘Anaconda’ may have a hard time overcoming this early negative attention.
