The last season of the Netflix show launched in the US over Thanksgiving and was a huge hit with viewers.
The first four episodes of Season 5 earned a record-breaking 8.46 billion viewing minutes in their first week (November 24-30), according to Nielsen. This is the highest weekly total ever for a streaming series.
The new season surpassed the previous record, which was set by Season 4 of Stranger Things. When Season 4 premiered in 2022, it garnered 7.2 billion minutes of watch time in its first week. Season 5 broke that record by over a billion minutes.
What’s particularly notable is when the new season became available. Season 5 was released at 5 p.m. Pacific Time on a Wednesday, during the middle of a holiday week. This is different from Season 4, which premiered on a Friday with seven episodes. For Season 5, only four episodes were released initially.
Nielsen’s data revealed more about the show’s audience. Roughly 57% of those who started watching completed the first four episodes, and the majority – about 59% – were between 18 and 49 years old.
Even before the new season started, people were really excited about the show. In the weeks before it premiered, many fans revisited previous seasons. This caused Stranger Things to become the most-watched show on Nielsen’s streaming chart again, racking up 1.6 billion minutes of viewing time the week before Season 5 launched.
Featuring Winona Ryder, David Harbour, Millie Bobby Brown, and the young cast of Finn Wolfhard, Noah Schnapp, Caleb McLaughlin, Sadie Sink, and Gaten Matarazzo, this series was created by Matt and Ross Duffer. It quickly became a major success for Netflix after its debut.
The last four episodes of Season 5 will be available on Christmas Day and New Year’s Eve in the United States. Given its already impressive viewership, the show’s total audience could grow even larger before the series concludes.
