STAR TREK: STRANGE NEW WORLDS Casts Bones and Sulu for Finale

Though season four of Star Trek: Strange New Worlds isn’t out for a while, filming for the fifth and final season has just finished. As promised by the show’s creators, the last episode will directly lead into the beginning of the original Star Trek series from the 1960s. Variety reports that the finale will introduce two key characters from Star Trek: The Original Series: Thomas Jane will play Dr. Leonard “Bones” McCoy, and Kai Murakami will portray Enterprise helmsman Hikaru Sulu.

You might be asking why Chekov isn’t around. He didn’t actually join the original Star Trek until the second season, so it makes sense he wouldn’t be present at the very start of Captain Kirk’s adventures. Recently, Strange New Worlds producer Akiva Goldsman has talked about wanting to create a series focusing on the first year of Kirk’s command—a Star Trek: Year One—featuring Paul Wesley as Kirk, Ethan Peck as Spock, Celia Rose Gooding as Uhura, Martin Quinn as Scott, and Jess Bush as Nurse Chapel. Now, with the addition of new actors playing Bones and Sulu, we have all the pieces in place to potentially make that happen.

Don’t expect to see Bones and Sulu back on the Enterprise bridge anytime soon. The fifth and final season of Strange New Worlds probably won’t be released until 2027, if not later. Paramount is going through changes with its new ownership, which has created some uncertainty about the future of Star Trek. We are confirmed to get at least two seasons of the new Starfleet Academy series, but there are currently no plans to follow up Strange New Worlds. Although Star Trek: Year One is a possibility, it likely won’t be a long-running show. Still, it’s good news that the original crew will reunite, even if it’s just for a single episode.
