Marty Supreme is generating a lot of buzz and is already looking like a major film of 2025. It recently premiered on Rotten Tomatoes with excellent reviews, making it one of Timothée Chalamet’s best-received movies so far.
Josh Safdie directed the film and co-wrote the screenplay with Ronald Bronstein. The story is based on the life of American table tennis star Marty Reisman. Timothée Chalamet plays the main character and also helped produce the film. The cast also features Gwyneth Paltrow, Odessa A’zion, Kevin O’Leary, Tyler Okonma, Abel Ferrara, and Fran Drescher.
Marty Supreme premiered at the New York Film Festival on October 6th and will be released in U.S. cinemas by A24 on December 25th. Early reviews on Rotten Tomatoes are overwhelmingly positive, giving the film a 95% rating based on 141 reviews – a significant success for both the movie and Timothée Chalamet.

Reviewers have particularly praised Timothée Chalamet’s acting. Ben Wasserman of Film-Forward.com suggested he’s a strong contender for an Oscar, writing that his performance in Marty Supreme could finally earn him the award. Jeff Mitchell from the Phoenix Film Festival agreed, stating Chalamet is a likely Best Actor winner, and his performance speaks for itself.
Reviews consistently point to the powerful nature of the performance. Jocelyn Noveck of the Associated Press applauded the casting, noting that Timothée Chalamet embodies the role with a remarkable and captivating synergy. Mark Jackson of the Epoch Times described Chalamet’s character as consistently creating suspense, adding that the performance is so intense it can be physically affecting.

The film has been highly praised by critics. Fico Cangiano of CineXpress called it “Phenomenal!” and compared it favorably to other fast-paced crime dramas. Wendy Ide of The Observer described it as a “thrilling visual onslaught,” noting it was excitingly exhausting, while Bilge Ebiri from New York Magazine’s Vulture called it “enormously entertaining.”
Okay, so the buzz is overwhelmingly good, but a few folks have pointed out some problems. Julian Roman at MovieWeb thought the movie dragged a bit and wasn’t always paced perfectly, but he was blown away by Timothée Chalamet – he called it an absolute powerhouse of a performance, the kind that deserves awards. Honestly, even the critics who weren’t completely sold agreed that Chalamet’s performance was something special and really stood out.
The film industry has reacted very positively to ‘Marty Supreme.’ It was named a top ten film of 2025 by both the National Board of Review and the American Film Institute, and it received three Golden Globe nominations: Best Motion Picture – Musical or Comedy, Best Actor for Timothée Chalamet, and Best Screenplay for the directing duo Safdie and Bronstein.
