Lady Gaga has a Christmas gift for her fans: a concert film called Lady Gaga in Harlequin Live — One Night Only, which will be available to stream on YouTube this Christmas Eve at 4 p.m. Pacific Time.
The soundtrack includes songs from Lady Gaga’s 2024 album, Harlequin, which was influenced by the film Joker: Folie à Deux. This announcement follows a recent event at the Grammy Museum where Gaga spoke with Variety’s Chris Willman about both the film and the album.
The concert was recorded at the Belasco Theatre in Los Angeles on September 30, 2024, during a show that lasted late into the night. Because only a limited number of fans were there, the performance felt intimate and special, like a hidden gem.
Variety was the only publication to review the concert, praising it as one of Lady Gaga’s best performances. Gaga explained the reason for releasing the concert footage now, saying, “We have something really special, and we’re excited to share it with our fans. It’s a bit of a rebellious project, and Christmas felt like the right time to release something unexpected, in line with the Harlequin spirit.”
The concert will showcase the complete Harlequin album played live by a six-member band. The stage is set to resemble a cluttered apartment, creating a personal and energetic atmosphere. Lady Gaga explained that the show’s design was inspired by the album’s artwork and her memories of performing in small, rundown apartments when she first started out in New York City. She said this history helped capture the album’s emotional and authentic sound in the live performance.
Lady Gaga initially intended to perform only three songs, but a few days before the show, she and Michael decided to play the entire album. She explained that she and her band rehearsed very little beforehand, aiming for a raw and heartfelt performance. Gaga also revealed that surf punk and jazz were key inspirations in developing the album’s unique sound.
The show was really special, with a beautiful tribute to Tony Bennett, who I had the honor of working with on some classic albums. During my performance of ‘Smile,’ they played a sweet video of him on a little TV on stage. It meant so much because he absolutely loved that song, and honestly, his version was one of my favorites – right up there with Nat King Cole’s!
