Sacha Baron Cohen shared a particularly embarrassing career moment during a Reddit “Ask Me Anything” session while promoting his 2016 film, The Brothers Grimsby. When a fan asked if he had any regrets, Cohen recounted a story from when he was playing his character, Bruno.
He mentioned a regret: during an appearance on an Australian late-night talk show, the person responsible for booking guests had made a significant error.
Cohen said the show had mistakenly double-booked the Australian Prime Minister, scheduling him for the same time slot as another appearance.
Sacha Baron Cohen had planned a provocative performance as his character Bruno, which included stripping down to a g-string. He explained, “I intended to perform a lap dance for the Australian Prime Minister and get very close to him – it would have caused a major international scandal and likely gotten me banned from Australia.”
Cohen later confessed he ultimately decided against the appearance. He explained, “I lost my nerve and ended up being prevented by the show’s security as well.” The show was likely ROVE, an Australian variety program hosted by comedian Rove McManus that aired from 1999 to 2009. Despite being Prime Minister at the time, Kevin Rudd and Cohen never shared the screen together.
Cohen is known for his ambitious and often dangerous plans throughout his career. Even the ideas he doesn’t actually pursue are remarkable and memorable.
