James Ransone, an actor famous for playing Ziggy Sobotka in the popular show “The Wire,” has passed away at 46 years old.
TMZ reports that Joseph Ransone died by suicide. The Los Angeles Medical Examiner confirmed he died by hanging, and police found no evidence of a crime at the scene.
Dominic Ransone started acting in the early 2000s, appearing in minor roles on television shows like “Ed” and “Third Watch.” He became well-known for his work on “The Wire,” where he played Ziggy, a complex and troubled dock worker with criminal connections, throughout the show’s second season. His performance was highly praised by critics and resonated with viewers.
Besides his role on “The Wire,” Ransone has been in several well-known TV shows like “CSI,” “Hawaii Five-0,” and “Burn Notice.” He’s also appeared in films such as “Tangerine,” “It: Chapter Two,” and “The Black Phone,” with a follow-up to “The Black Phone” released earlier in 2024.
Ransone experienced difficult times in his personal life. In May 2021, he revealed on Instagram that he had been sexually abused by his math tutor in 1992. He reported this abuse to the police in Baltimore County in 2020, but the case wasn’t investigated. Before turning 27, Ransone battled a heroin addiction and accumulated considerable debt, but he achieved sobriety in 2007. He was married to Jamie McPhee and had a son.
Ransone’s work has left a lasting impression on both television and film audiences.
