Cher Makes a Glamorous Return to ‘SNL’ After 40 Years With Holiday Performance

Cher returned to Saturday Night Live on December 20th, performing as the musical guest for the first time in over 40 years. Her performance was part of the season’s last episode, which was hosted by Ariana Grande and also marked Bowen Yang’s final appearance as a cast member.

Cher, 79, kicked off her performance with her 2023 holiday song, “DJ Play A Christmas Song.” She wore a blond wig, a leather jacket, and holiday-themed pants while singing and dancing with a group of performers. She delivered the song, which featured a vocoder effect, with her signature style, finishing with her trademark microphone hold, a bow, and a heartfelt wave to the audience.

For her second song, Cher performed a rendition of Chuck Berry’s Christmas favorite, “Run, Run Rudolph.” Backed by The Roots and a group of singers, she wore a black and silver outfit with a black wig as artificial snow created a winter wonderland on stage. Cher’s strong voice and energetic performance perfectly captured the holiday mood, proving she still has incredible stage presence after so many years.

Cher didn’t just perform songs; her music was woven into the show’s comedy sketches. For example, her 1998 song “Believe” was cleverly used as part of a funny courtroom scene. She also unexpectedly showed up to celebrate Bowen Yang leaving the show, offering him heartfelt congratulations and a friendly goodbye.
