I just finished watching Dave Chappelle‘s new Netflix special, The Unstoppable, and it’s already making waves. He touched on the recent passing of Charlie Kirk, the conservative commentator, and, as you might expect from Chappelle, his take on it wasn’t without some jokes. Honestly, the special is sparking a lot of debate among viewers, and it’s clear he’s not shying away from tackling tough topics – or getting a reaction from the audience.
Look, I have to say, I strongly disagree with some of the comparisons I’ve seen. Some of Kirk’s supporters were really trying to paint him as this generation’s Martin Luther King Jr., and honestly, that’s a stretch. I heard people – especially some white folks – making that claim, and it just doesn’t hold water. It’s simply not accurate.
He pointed out that both men died tragically, both being shot in the neck, but stressed that this was the only thing they had in common. He stated, “They both met terrible ends, but that’s where the similarities stop.”
Chappelle also explained why he didn’t think comparing Charlie Kirk to Martin Luther King Jr. was fair. He bluntly stated that Kirk is simply an internet personality, and by his very nature, can’t operate on the same level as Dr. King. He then playfully imagined how Dr. King might phrase his message on today’s social media, saying something like, “’Hit like and subscribe! Follow me for more! I believe all Black people deserve freedom—prove me wrong!’”
During the show, Chappelle talked about how disturbed he was by the September killing of Charlie Kirk. He admitted, “When you make a living speaking and then see someone like Charlie Kirk killed like that, I was really shaken up.” He also mentioned being surprised that Kirk was seen as a genuinely good, all-American person.
Chappelle also addressed the conspiracy theories that spread after Kirk’s death, including some that falsely connected it to transgender issues. He jokingly described his initial reaction to the rumors, saying, “When the information was still unclear, people claimed there were transgender messages written on the bullets. I thought, ‘Oh no, I’m a goner!’”
Chappelle spoke about Congress’s unanimous decision to designate October 14th as a National Day of Remembrance for Chris Kirk, stating he had no objections to the choice. He then pointed out that while it’s good to honor Kirk, Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. overcame far greater obstacles to have his memory preserved.
Chappelle pointed out that Martin Luther King Jr.’s legacy wasn’t immediately secure, contrasting that with the current reaction to Charlie Kirk. He also empathized with Kirk’s supporters, explaining he understands the pain of losing someone you admire, saying, ‘I know what it’s like to see someone you look up to attacked by someone insignificant.’
People have had a variety of reactions to Chappelle’s recent comments. Some felt he went too far, with one fan saying, “Even if you don’t like Charlie Kirk, this was unneeded.” Others have pointed out that Chappelle’s comedy has changed over the years, noting that he now often targets transgender people and deceased activists, a departure from his earlier work that focused on criticizing those in power. One person commented that he seems to have ‘lost the plot.’
A few defended his political edge, praising his willingness to speak his mind.
Dave Chappelle continues to challenge expectations with his comedy, but his style often divides audiences. He mixes jokes with observations about society, and this can be particularly sensitive when he addresses tragic events, meaning not everyone will appreciate his approach.
