Taylor Swift is a highly respected songwriter, but even the most talented artists don’t consistently produce their best work.
“The Life of a Showgirl” exemplifies this unevenness in Taylor Swift’s songwriting. While some of her lyrics are truly beautiful, others simply didn’t work and should have been scrapped. Both fans and critics generally consider it a weak song in her discography.
While The Life of a Showgirl wasn’t the first album to include some weaker tracks – parts of her overall work can be quite uneven – even her less successful songs have a certain captivating quality. It’s similar to how you can’t help but watch something disastrous unfold.
Five times Taylor Swift’s lyrical talent fell short
As a huge Taylor Swift fan, I’ve noticed something kind of funny. Even though she’s the biggest star in music right now, sometimes her lyrics are just…weird! It reminds me a little of Kurt Cobain – he had those quirky lines too, though Taylor’s aren’t always as deep. Either way, there are definitely some lyrics she’s written that have stuck with me – and not always in a good way! I’m taking a look at some of those unforgettable moments in her songwriting.
5. “Father Figure”
“Father Figure” draws strong parallels to The Godfather. Taylor Swift embodies a Don Corleone-like character, with Olivia Rodrigo playing her apprentice. In a dramatic line, Swift warns Rodrigo, “You’ll be sleeping with the fishes before you know you’re drowning!” This raises the question: is it appropriate for pop stars to sing about violent fantasies?
4. “Look What You Made Me Do”
Okay, so in the bridge of the song, Taylor says, “I’m sorry, the old Taylor can’t come to the phone right now… she’s dead!” Honestly, if you’re in the mood for something over-the-top and a little ridiculous, it’s pretty funny. But the thing is, it was supposed to be a scary line, and it just… doesn’t quite land that way.
3. “Tortured Poets’ Department”
Taylor Swift once told an ex-boyfriend, “You’re not a legendary poet like Dylan Thomas, and I’m no groundbreaking artist like Patti Smith / This isn’t some romantic, historical scene, we’re just ordinary people.” While it might seem harsh, this line can be seen as Swift acknowledging she doesn’t believe she reaches the same level of artistry as those iconic songwriters. Unfortunately, this honesty provided critics with fuel to attack her work.
2. “Wood”
Many people remember Wood for the explicit lyrics in their song, particularly the line about a “Redwood tree” and a very personal connection. It’s a bit awkward to discuss, and I’d rather keep this article appropriate for all ages. It’s remarkable how far Taylor Swift has come since her early days performing with Hannah Montana.
1. “Me!”
Okay, so as a Taylor Swift fan, I have to admit, that line – “Hey, kids! / Spelling is fun!” – is just…rough. It’s not even that it’s weird, or that it doesn’t work as a funny moment. It’s more that it feels like she’s talking down to us, like we’re five years old. It’s a weird vibe, and honestly, a lot of us Swifties cringe at it.
