Rob Reiner Reportedly Admitted Fear of Son Nick at Conan O’Brien’s Holiday Party With Shocking Words

Sources say director Rob Reiner was worried about his son, Nick, just before Nick passed away.

According to the Daily Mail, the late director confided in a guest at Conan O’Brien’s holiday party on December 13th that he was afraid of his son, Nick. He reportedly said, “I’m petrified of [Nick]. I can’t believe I’m going to say this, but I’m afraid of my son. I think my own son can hurt me.”

Rob, 78, and his wife, Michele, 70, were found stabbed to death at their home in Brentwood on December 14th. The Los Angeles County Medical Examiner determined that both died from multiple stab wounds and classified their deaths as homicides.

Nick Reiner, 32, was arrested and charged with two counts of murder after the incident. Police say he left the scene immediately afterward and made his first court appearance on Wednesday. He is scheduled to be formally arraigned on January 7, 2026. Nick has an older brother named Jake and a younger sister named Romy. He earned his GED but did not go to college.

According to reports, Rob and his wife had a disagreement with Nick at a holiday party shortly before they died. A friend of the family shared with The Post that Rob had expressed concerns about Nick’s declining mental health and unpredictable actions.

Attendees at the event found Nick’s behavior disturbing. According to one source who spoke with People magazine, he was behaving erratically and repeatedly asked people if they were celebrities. Another source described his actions to Us Weekly as “creepy.”

Nick has faced significant personal challenges, including struggles with substance abuse and multiple trips to rehab. He reportedly sought treatment for heroin and cocaine addiction 18 times during his teenage years.

In 2015, he co-wrote the film Being Charlie, a personal story inspired by his life and his bond with his father. Rob Reiner directed the movie, and reports suggest that working on it helped him rebuild his relationship with his dad. He was living at home with his parents when he passed away.

A memorial service for Rob and Michele took place at the Los Angeles home of comedian Albert Brooks. Among those attending were Billy Crystal with his wife Janice, Larry David, Bill Hader, and Conan O’Brien. Guests were said to be deeply moved by stories shared about Rob, particularly his final thoughts concerning his son.

This sad situation shows the difficult challenges some families experience with mental health and addiction. It’s a powerful reminder that problems can worsen quickly if they aren’t dealt with. We’d like to hear your reactions to this upsetting story – please share your thoughts in the comments.
