I recently watched a fascinating video about how the Star Wars posters were made! I learned that the artist who did the first poster, Tom Jung, hadn’t even seen the movie when he was creating it. He worked from photos taken on set and concept art. It’s wild because his version, with what he called “Sexy Luke and Leia,” looks nothing like how they actually appeared in the film! Apparently, George Lucas liked that the poster took artistic liberties instead of being completely accurate. The studio, though, thought Jung’s poster was too gloomy, so they asked the Hildebrandt Brothers to create a brighter, more kid-friendly version of the same idea.
The video also highlights the work of the late Drew Stuzan, whose poster for the original Revenge of the Jedi – later renamed Return of the Jedi – remains highly sought after by collectors. While it’s not the most expensive Star Wars poster available now, the video reveals which one currently commands the highest price and which poster the experts at Paper and Light consider the ultimate classic Star Wars movie poster.
