Hero Fiennes Tiffin plays Sherlock Holmes, but this isn’t the familiar, sophisticated detective most people know. This Sherlock is young, hot-tempered, and still figuring things out. He’s new to the detective world, struggles with his emotions, and is working to rebuild his reputation.
The show delves into the formative years of the iconic detective, revealing him as a brilliant but undisciplined young man before his famous cases on Baker Street. Essentially, it’s a story about a gifted boy learning to manage his intelligence and outspoken nature, as summarized by the show’s description:
Inspired by Guy Ritchie’s Sherlock Holmes movies, Young Sherlock tells the story of how Sir Arthur Conan Doyle’s famous detective began his career. The series shows a young, flawed Sherlock Holmes stumbling into a murder mystery that puts him in danger. As he investigates, he uncovers a worldwide conspiracy that will change his life forever.
The story opens in the 1870s at Oxford University, introducing a 19-year-old Sherlock Holmes long before he’s the famous detective we know. He’s reckless, easily frustrated, and hasn’t yet honed his skills. When a murder occurs at Oxford, threatening his own freedom, he finds himself investigating his very first case. This initial mystery quickly spirals into a perilous worldwide journey, ultimately shaping him into the legendary detective he’s destined to be.
The show features both well-known actors and new talent. Zine Tseng stars as Princess Gulun Shou’an, a clever and skilled Chinese princess who is both a scholar and a fighter. Joseph Fiennes and Natascha McElhone play Sherlock’s parents: Silas, a man of adventure, and Cordelia, a creative artist.
Colin Firth stars as Sir Bucephalus Hodge, and Dónal Finn will play James Moriarty, who will become Sherlock Holmes’s famous enemy. Max Irons appears as Mycroft Holmes, Sherlock’s brother. The show also includes performances by Numan Acar, Ravi Aujla, Holly Cattle, Simon Delaney, Adam James, Rachel Shelley, and Ian Midlane.
The series Young Sherlock is based on Andrew Lane’s novels of the same name, which offer a fresh take on the well-known stories by Arthur Conan Doyle. Directed by Guy Ritchie, it aims to capture the exciting and visually dynamic style of his previous Sherlock Holmes films starring Robert Downey Jr., but focuses on a younger, more rebellious, and unpredictable Sherlock.
