As a total cinema lover, I’ve always been fascinated by how celebrities use their platforms, and it’s always a surprise when they vote differently than you’d expect. It’s generally assumed everyone in Hollywood leans left, but I’ve noticed a growing number of prominent Black actors and artists who’ve publicly supported Republicans or candidates who aren’t part of the usual political system. It always creates a huge conversation, because it reminds everyone that there’s a huge range of opinions within the Black community. I’ve put together a list of twenty stars who really shook things up by backing candidates that went against the grain – it’s a really interesting look at who they’re choosing and why.
Amber Rose

The model and activist surprised many of her fans when she spoke at the 2024 Republican National Convention, voicing her support for Donald Trump. Known for previously organizing the ‘SlutWalk’ protest and publicly criticizing the former president, she completely changed her position. Rose explained she had independently researched the issues and now believes the media misrepresented Trump’s character and policies. Her speech centered on economic security and her conviction that Trump is the best leader for American families.
Snoop Dogg

The famous West Coast rapper Snoop Dogg once made a controversial music video showing a fake assassination of a clown that looked like Donald Trump. However, during the 2024 election, he publicly expressed support for Trump, saying he had a lot of respect for him. This change of heart happened mainly because Trump granted a pardon to Michael Harris, a co-founder of Death Row Records. Snoop Dogg explained he wouldn’t criticize someone who had done something good for people he cares about.
50 Cent

Look, as a fan, I’ve seen this rapper from Queens get really vocal about taxes, especially how the Democrats wanted to raise them. He actually told people to vote for Trump back in 2020 because he didn’t like Biden’s tax plan for high earners here in New York. He took back that direct endorsement later, but he still seemed to respect how Trump handled things during the 2024 campaign. It was wild when his song ‘Many Men’ started playing at Trump rallies, especially after the attempt on the former president’s life – it really became the song for the campaign.
Ice Cube

Ice Cube, the well-known rapper, received criticism during the 2020 election after it became public that he had met with officials from the Trump administration about his plan to improve economic conditions for Black Americans. He explained that he was open to working with anyone in power to benefit Black communities. Ice Cube felt Democrats asked him to hold off on discussions until after the election, while the Trump team was willing to engage immediately. He emphasized that his main concern was making progress for his community, not supporting a particular political party.
Lil Wayne

People were surprised to see the popular rapper posing with Donald Trump shortly before the 2020 election. Lil Wayne spoke positively about Trump’s Platinum Plan, believing it would bring meaningful improvements to the criminal justice system. This happened just before he received a pardon from the President for a federal gun charge. Since then, he has continued to publicly support and admire the former businessman and politician.
Kanye West

I’ll never forget when Kanye West went to the White House wearing that red ‘MAGA’ hat – it completely took over the news! He explained it made him feel powerful, like Superman, and he genuinely admired Trump’s willingness to do things differently. What always struck me was how much he valued being able to think for himself, and how he refused to let people tell him how a Black celebrity should behave politically. Even with all the criticism and when he decided to run for president himself, he stayed true to his beliefs, and I really respected that.
Sexyy Red

The up-and-coming rapper Sexyy Red caused a stir when she publicly backed Donald Trump in a recent podcast. She explained that the stimulus checks sent out during his time as president were a big reason why she supported him. She also noted that many people in her community felt he was down-to-earth and humorous. As a result, she’s even started using a play on his campaign slogan, “Make America Sexyy Again,” in her products and image.
Kodak Black

Kodak Black, a rapper from Florida, publicly began supporting Donald Trump after Trump commuted his federal prison sentence in early 2021. Since then, Kodak Black has appeared at rallies and repeatedly thanked the former president for giving him a fresh start. He’s downplayed any criticism of Trump, emphasizing his personal gratitude for being released from prison. This situation demonstrates how a presidential pardon can strongly influence someone’s political beliefs.
Azealia Banks

The Harlem rapper, known for speaking her mind and often sparking debate, surprised many by attending a Trump rally in Florida during the 2024 election campaign. She’s called the former president an icon, admiring his humor and ability to bounce back from challenges. While she backed him in 2016, she briefly stepped back from her support before ultimately reaffirming it. She frequently uses her platform to criticize the Democratic Party and what she sees as their focus on appearances rather than real action.
Waka Flocka Flame

Atlanta rapper Waka Flocka Flame announced he’s backing Donald Trump in 2024, explaining he wants to secure his family’s and his own financial well-being. He even told fans at his concerts that anyone who disagreed with his political choice should leave. Flocka Flame defended Trump against claims of racism, emphasizing his focus on a strong economy as the main reason for his support. His decision highlights a trend of Black male artists choosing financial stability as a key factor in their political views.
Herschel Walker

Herschel Walker, the famous football player, used his close relationship with Donald Trump to begin a campaign for the U.S. Senate in Georgia. He ran as a strong conservative, focusing on preserving traditional American values. Throughout a very public and often heated election, he had the complete support of the former president. Walker’s move from sports star to politician was largely defined by his consistent support for the MAGA movement.
Stacey Dash

After publicly supporting Mitt Romney in 2012, actress Stacey Dash largely stepped away from mainstream Hollywood roles. She then became a commentator for Fox News and continued to voice support for conservative politicians like Donald Trump. Dash explained that she felt the Democratic Party hadn’t earned the support of Black voters. This shift in her political views made her a controversial figure in the entertainment world.
Isaiah Washington

Isaiah Washington, known for his role on ‘Grey’s Anatomy,’ became a leading figure in the #WalkAway movement, which urges people to switch their political affiliation from the Democratic Party. He has been critical of the Democratic Party, arguing it hasn’t kept its long-standing promises to the Black community. Washington publicly endorsed Donald Trump and used his platform to discuss conservative ideas and the importance of self-reliance. A key focus of his political work is encouraging African Americans to think for themselves and not vote as a unified bloc.
Dennis Rodman

Dennis Rodman, the famous and unconventional basketball player, became friends with Donald Trump while appearing on ‘The Celebrity Apprentice’. He publicly supported Trump’s campaigns for president, admiring what he saw as Trump’s power and ability to make deals. Rodman even took on a surprising role in international relations, trying to encourage communication between the Trump administration and North Korea. He believed he and Trump had a genuine personal connection that went beyond politics.
Mike Tyson

Boxing legend Mike Tyson was an early supporter of Donald Trump, first in 2016 and continuing through 2024. Tyson has said he appreciates Trump’s support during times when others in the media criticized him. He believes Trump’s business background would be beneficial to running the country and considers him a friend capable of leading. Tyson has also tended to downplay controversies involving Trump, pointing to their long-standing relationship.
Jim Brown

After the 2016 election, legendary NFL running back Jim Brown surprised many who fought for civil rights when he visited Donald Trump at Trump Tower. Brown explained he respected Trump’s ability to win a tough election, even when facing long odds. He hoped to collaborate with the new administration to improve economic opportunities in struggling urban areas, believing that working from within was more effective than protesting. He felt it was important to be involved and contribute to positive change.
Colin Powell

In a surprising move during the 2008 election, a highly respected four-star general and longtime Republican publicly supported Democrat Barack Obama. Colin Powell explained he saw Obama as a leader who could bring real change and disapproved of the harsh attacks from the John McCain campaign. This was unexpected given Powell’s decades of service in Republican administrations, but he felt Obama’s character and the importance of the moment were more important than sticking with his own party.
Killer Mike

Although it’s not uncommon for him to support a Democrat, rapper Killer Mike of Run the Jewels chose Bernie Sanders instead of the more mainstream candidates, Hillary Clinton and Joe Biden. He actively campaigned for Sanders, who describes himself as a democratic socialist, and criticized the moderate policies of the Democratic Party. In 2020, he wouldn’t endorse Biden, saying Black voters deserve real results in return for their support. This choice showed a growing divide within the traditional Democratic base.
Antonio Brown

In 2024, former NFL player Antonio Brown became a supporter of Donald Trump, actively participating in the MAGA movement. He was spotted registering voters at rallies in Pennsylvania, where he openly praised Trump’s business skills and charisma. Brown often wore Trump campaign gear while engaging with fans. He also expressed frustration with how the media covered Trump, drawing parallels to the controversies he faced during his football career.
Lawrence Taylor

Former New York Giants star Harry Carson publicly announced he will no longer vote for Democratic candidates at a large rally in New Jersey. He met and shook hands with Donald Trump, telling attendees that the businessman had a positive impact on his life. Carson explained he switched parties due to his views on the economy and what he sees as strong leadership. His support highlights the appeal Trump has with some well-known, traditionally masculine athletes.
