As a lifelong movie fan, I’ve always noticed how Hollywood often sidelines women as they get older, usually limiting them to motherly roles or just having them in the background. It’s been even tougher for Black actresses, who have to deal with both ageism and racism. But thankfully, things are starting to change! We’re finally seeing incredibly talented veteran actresses take back control and portray themselves as desirable, complex women on screen. I’ve been so excited to see a growing number of films actually cast Black women over 50 as genuine romantic leads, proving that age really has no bearing on someone’s desirability or ability to be the heart of a love story.

‘The Perfect Find’ (2023)

In the romantic comedy ‘The Perfect Find,’ Gabrielle Union plays Jenna Jones, a fashion editor looking to revitalize her career and who finds herself in a secret relationship. The movie does a beautiful job of showing both her strength as a mother and the fact that she’s still deeply in love with her husband.
