It’s with a heavy heart that I share the news of Gil Gerard’s passing. Best known for his work on television in the early 80s, he died this Tuesday at the age of 82, after a brave but short fight with cancer. His wife, Janet, shared the news on social media, letting us know he passed away peacefully while in hospice care, with her by his side. He was a familiar face, and he’ll be missed.
Later that day, Janet Gerard shared a message her husband had written before he passed away on his Facebook page. He had intended for it to be posted to his fans after his death.
He described his 82 years as a wonderful life, filled with great experiences, meaningful connections, and a lot of love. He encouraged others to focus on what truly excites them and brings them joy, adding a hopeful ‘See you somewhere out there!’

I was such a big fan of Buck Rogers in the 25th Century! It was this really fun sci-fi show on NBC that only lasted a couple of seasons, but it was a blast. Gil Gerard was perfect as Buck, a guy who basically slept into the future and ended up being a hero. The show had everything – space adventures, a lot of laughs, and a great supporting cast. Erin Gray played Wilma Deering, Thom Christopher was Hawk, and who could forget Twiki, the robot voiced by the legendary Mel Blanc? It was a truly special show!
The show started as a single TV movie, which was then used as the first episode of the series. Though it didn’t last for a long time on television, it gained a dedicated group of fans and is still popular today.
Following the conclusion of Buck Rogers, Gerard continued to work consistently as an actor. He made numerous appearances in television shows and smaller films, including the role of Dr. John Harding on the CBS series E.A.R.T.H. Force, a brief part on Days of Our Lives, and a supporting role in The Nice Guys with Russell Crowe and Ryan Gosling.
Before becoming well-known for his science fiction roles, Gerard spent years acting in daytime TV. He was a regular on NBC’s The Doctors, appearing in over 300 episodes as Dr. Alan Stewart.
Janet Gerard shared a heartfelt message about the passing of her husband. She wrote, “This morning, my beloved husband Gil lost his battle with a very aggressive and rare cancer. It all happened so quickly – from the time we learned something was wrong to his passing, it was only a few days. No amount of time with him would have ever been enough. Cherish your loved ones and tell them how much you care.”
