Anime now features many more strong Black and dark-skinned female fighters who are central to exciting and competitive stories. These characters are incredibly skilled, powerful, and smart, often shining in tournaments and battles. They frequently match or even exceed the abilities of the main heroes, and their wins have made a lasting impact on the anime genre, whether they’re magical girls or martial arts experts.
‘Pokémon’ (1997–2023)

I’m a huge fan of Iris! She’s become one of the very best trainers in the Pokémon world, achieving the rank of Champion in the Unova League. What really impresses me is how well she connects with her Dragon-types, especially Haxorus and Dragonite – they’re a force to be reckoned with in battle! It’s amazing to see how far she’s come, from a free-spirited girl playing in the forest to competing with the Elite Four in the World Coronation Series. She’s battled and beaten so many strong regional champions, and rightfully earned her place among the top trainers globally. She’s a true inspiration!
‘Bleach’ (2004–2012)

Yoruichi Shihoin, nicknamed the Goddess of Flash, is a powerful fighter known for her incredible speed and skill in hand-to-hand combat. Though she doesn’t often compete in tournaments, she’s undefeated in official battles within the Soul Society and Fake Karakura Town. She’s famous for easily defeating opponents, like the captain of the Stealth Force, using her speed and smart tactics – often without even needing to use a sword. This makes her a popular character among fans.
‘My Hero Academia’ (2016–Present)

Mirko, whose real name is Rumi Usagiyama, is a top-ranked hero in Japan, currently holding the number five spot. She loves a good fight, approaching every battle like a competition, and is incredibly strong and agile, especially with her legs. During the Paranormal Liberation War, she impressively took on several powerful Nomus all by herself, demonstrating her skill as a fighter. Her fighting style is similar to kickboxing, and she wins through determination and raw physical strength.
‘Hunter x Hunter’ (2011)

Canary works as a butler-in-training for the Zoldyck family and is a strong defender of their estate. She repeatedly defeats Gon Freecss and his friends in practice fights, blocking them from entering. She’s a skilled fighter who uses a cane with deadly accuracy, as shown when she quickly defeats dozens of armed hunters during a major event. Despite being young, Canary remains calm and collected like a professional fighter.
‘Street Fighter II: V’ (1995)

Elena is a lively and energetic fighter who uses the Brazilian martial art of Capoeira to confuse and overcome her opponents. As a princess from an East African tribe, she travels the globe, challenging powerful fighters and experiencing different cultures through battle. Her movements perfectly reflect the graceful, flowing style of Capoeira, helping her defeat even experienced martial arts masters. She’s also a groundbreaking character – one of the first Black women to be featured as a skilled fighter in a video game.

‘Michiko & Hatchin’ (2008–2009)

Michiko Malandro is a fugitive on a dangerous journey to reunite with her beloved. She’s constantly battling anyone who gets in her way – police, bounty hunters, and dangerous gangs – and sees every fight as a matter of life or death. While not technically skilled, Michiko is a powerful and resourceful fighter, using her strength and quick thinking to overcome even armed enemies. She’s a charismatic and physically imposing force, and remains unbroken in her determination.
‘Deadman Wonderland’ (2011)

Karako Koshio is a highly skilled fighter and prisoner who managed to survive the deadly Carnival Corpse tournament, a brutal competition held for entertainment. She can create armor made of blood using her unique ability, which makes her both stronger and more resistant to attacks. As a key leader in the Scar Chain resistance group, she consistently wins fights that help reveal the widespread corruption within the prison. Her success in the arena proves she’s incredibly tough and a seasoned combatant in life-or-death situations.
‘Fire Force’ (2019–2020)

Princess Hibana overcame a difficult past to become the leader of Special Fire Force Company 5. She fights using pyrokinesis, creating incredibly hot, flower-shaped flames that crush her enemies. Initially, Hibana earned her position through strength and a fearsome reputation, controlling those around her with power. Now, she’s become a valuable ally, proving her skill as a battlefield commander.
‘Cannon Busters’ (2019)

S.A.M. is a sophisticated companion droid with a powerful secret: she can transform into a devastating weapon. As she journeys through a treacherous world, she faces off against bounty hunters and colossal robots in battles reminiscent of tournaments. In her transformed state, she can instantly destroy even the largest enemies, ensuring success for those traveling with her. What makes S.A.M. special is the striking difference between her gentle personality and her incredible fighting ability.
‘Basquash!’ (2009)

Miyuki Ayukawa is a talented mechanic and pilot who competes in Big Foot Basketball, a fast-paced tournament played with giant robots. She’s incredibly skilled at controlling her machine, moving with the same accuracy as top athletes. Miyuki is a key player for her team, consistently using her abilities to beat opponents in this futuristic sport. She demonstrates that in competitive anime, smarts and piloting skill can be just as important as physical power.
‘Eureka Seven’ (2005–2006)

Okay, so Hilda’s basically the pilot and second-in-command on the Terminus, this awesome rebel ship. She doesn’t just fly it, she runs the whole operation. And she’s a seriously skilled fighter pilot – constantly in dogfights with the military. What’s really cool is how she uses those skills to protect the younger crew members, winning battles through smarts and sheer piloting ability. She’s a total badass in the cockpit, but also has this protective, almost motherly side – a really interesting mix, and a strong leader overall.
‘Darker than Black’ (2007)

April is a skilled contractor who can control air pressure, letting her create storms and rain in specific areas. She’s part of a tight-knit team fighting a hidden war against other contractors for information and to stay alive. She plays a key role in their successes during the Hundred-Year War, consistently defeating heavily armored opponents and enemy commanders in battle. Her abilities are exceptional – she can even fight Guts, the main character, to a draw during practice. Casca is a memorable and powerful example of a strong, dark-skinned woman succeeding as a warrior in a medieval world dominated by men.
