Netflix has cancelled the show Boots, a comedy-drama about growing up in the military, after only one season. The show was known for its diverse cast.
This decision marks the end of the last show created by television icon Norman Lear, even though it received positive reviews and attracted a solid audience.
Netflix has decided not to renew the show for a second season, more than two months after its initial eight episodes were released, according to Deadline.
Why Netflix Pulled the Plug on Boots
Deadline reports that the cancellation was not described as a simple ratings failure.
To increase the chances of the show continuing, Sony renewed contracts with several actors in August, including Miles Heizer, Liam Oh, Kieron Moore, Dominic Goodman, Angus O’Brien, Blake Burt, and Rico Paris.
Well, it’s official – sadly, Netflix won’t be renewing the show for another season. And because of how Netflix operates, with its exclusive rights, it’s pretty much impossible for another streaming service or network to pick it up. So, yeah, it’s canceled, and I’m really bummed about it.
A Politically Charged Premise
The film Boots tells the story of Cameron Cope and his friend Ray McAffey, who joined Marine boot camp in 1990. Cameron is secretly gay, a dangerous secret at the time because of the military’s ban on openly gay service members. The film is based on Greg Cope White’s memoir, The Pink Marine, and was created by Andy Parker.
The show explored current ideas about identity, and it used the U.S. Marine Corps as the setting. This choice proved to be divisive after the series was released.
Pentagon Backlash and “Woke Garbage” Label
After the show’s launch, the Pentagon publicly criticized Boots, dismissing it as “woke garbage.”
The show gained a lot of viewers and appeared on Netflix’s top charts, but this popularity may not continue for very long.
Despite the spike, Netflix ultimately chose not to move forward.
Adding to the situation, Netflix is also facing questions about its potential acquisition of Warner Bros. Discovery, alongside the recent cancellation of several shows.
