I was really surprised to hear James Woods speak out like that. Even though he’s been a long-time supporter of Donald Trump, he said Trump’s recent comments about Rob Reiner after his passing were ‘distasteful’ and genuinely upset him. He shared this during an interview on Fox News last night, and it was pretty striking to see, considering his usual stance.
Woody Harrelson recently discussed his relationship with Rob Reiner on Jesse Watters’ show. He shared that working with Reiner on the 1996 film Ghosts of Mississippi was a turning point for him, both personally and professionally. Harrelson explained that Reiner supported him during a difficult time when many others didn’t.
During an interview, Woods shared how Rob played a crucial role in reviving his career. He explained that Rob advocated for him with a studio that was hesitant to cast him, and that this ultimately led to a career resurgence, culminating in an Academy Award nomination. Woods emphasized that he owes his success to Rob’s support.
Woods got emotional discussing his friendship with Reiner, particularly because they held opposing political views. Reiner was a well-known liberal activist, and Woods is a staunch supporter of Trump. Woods explained that many people were surprised they could stay friends despite their differences.
Woods explained that how people treat him is his main way of judging them, and he considered director Rob Reiner a wonderful person in his life. They had a strong connection, genuinely liked each other, and Reiner was always supportive.
Woods emphasized that despite their political differences, he and Rob Reiner maintained mutual respect. He described Reiner as a patriot, even though they disagreed on how to best demonstrate it. He explained that disagreement doesn’t have to lead to animosity, stating, “Just because you disagree with someone doesn’t mean you have to hate them.”
During the interview, Woods also shared how Reiner responded to political violence. He mentioned Reiner’s statement following the death of conservative activist Charlie Kirk, where Reiner strongly condemned the act and emphasized that violence is never justified, regardless of differing opinions.
Look, I knew Charlie Kirk, and I actually supported him. So when he passed away, I was really disappointed to see some people pile on. That’s why it’s so frustrating to me now to see Rob Reiner getting attacked the same way. Honestly, when I hear people saying awful things about Rob right now, it just infuriates and disgusts me. It feels particularly low given what happened with Charlie.
Don’t miss this: Veteran actor James Woods gets visibly emotional discussing how Rob Reiner helped revitalize his career. He explains, “Rob literally saved my career and put me back on track in a really important and rewarding way.” He also reflects on how people often wondered about his strong connection with Reiner.

Reiner and his wife, Michele, were found murdered at their home in Brentwood, California, on December 14th. Following the news, former President Donald Trump used his social media platform, Truth Social, to criticize Reiner’s political views and express strong disapproval. He echoed these sentiments at a press conference, stating he disliked Reiner and calling him “deranged.”

Honestly, I was really struck by what Woods said – it felt like a line had been crossed. He ended by sharing how heartbroken he was. He admitted he didn’t see eye-to-eye with the person politically, but he emphasized that he genuinely loved them – as a friend, as someone incredibly talented, as a Hollywood legend, and as someone who loved this country. He was truly devastated, and you could feel it.
