Jerry Seinfeld Credits Rob Reiner for Saving His Show from Cancellation: ‘‘Our Show Would Have Never Happened Without Him’’

Jerry Seinfeld paid tribute to Rob Reiner, acknowledging Reiner’s crucial role in preventing the early cancellation of the show Seinfeld. He credited Reiner with helping to save the sitcom during its initial seasons.

On Monday, December 15th, comedian Jerry Seinfeld, 71, posted a photo to Instagram with Rob Reiner and Rob’s father, the late Carl Reiner. In the post, Seinfeld credited Rob Reiner as a major inspiration in his career, alongside Larry David, his co-creator, and the late George Shapiro, who was his producer and manager.

Seinfeld credits one individual with being essential to the show’s success. He explained that this person had a unique vision and, crucially, protected the show from being canceled after the network initially reacted poorly to the first few episodes.

The popular sitcom Seinfeld aired from 1989 to 1998 and featured Jerry Seinfeld alongside Julia Louis-Dreyfus, Jason Alexander, Jerry Stiller, and Wayne Knight. It was produced by Castle Rock Entertainment, a company founded by Rob Reiner.

Seinfeld shared his fond memories of Carl Reiner, explaining how special it was to work with Carl’s son, Rob. He recalled being unaware at the time just how much Rob and his wife, Michele, supported the show. He saw their marriage – happening as Seinfeld began – as a model for a strong, mutually supportive relationship, and was deeply saddened by their passing. He described their deaths, occurring close together, as incredibly heartbreaking.

In a 2016 interview with Howard Stern, director Rob Reiner shared that Seinfeld almost didn’t make it. He explained that NBC was considering canceling the show after the initial episodes didn’t perform well with audiences.

According to Reiner, NBC initially rejected the show, questioning its concept as simply ‘people sitting around talking.’ He remembers a heated argument with NBC executive Brandon Tartikoff, where he desperately pleaded with him to not cancel the series.

I was practically begging them, telling them, ‘Please, I swear this show is going to deliver amazing stories! Don’t cancel it now – it’s going to be huge, one of the best shows you’ve ever put on!’ That’s what I told them.

Director Rob Reiner, 78, and his wife, Michele Singer Reiner, 68, were found dead at their home in Brentwood, California on December 14th. Authorities believe they were victims of homicide. Their 32-year-old son, Nick Reiner, has been arrested and is currently being held without bail in connection with their deaths. Their daughter, Romy, reportedly discovered their bodies.

As a huge fan of both Seinfeld and Rob Reiner, it was really touching to see the show pay tribute to him. It really drove home how much of a lasting mark he’s made on TV, and it was cool to hear about the genuine connections he forged with everyone involved.
