On Monday’s “Jimmy Kimmel Live!”, Jimmy Kimmel responded to controversial comments made by Donald Trump regarding the deaths of filmmaker Rob Reiner and his wife, Michele Singer.
Trump wrote on his social media platform, Truth Social, that Rob Reiner’s passing was a result of the frustration and animosity caused by his strong opposition to Trump, which Trump labeled ‘Trump Derangement Syndrome.’

Jimmy Kimmel strongly criticized the president’s response to the recent tragedy, stating that compassion and leadership were needed, alongside common sense approaches to gun control and mental healthcare. He felt the president failed to provide either, instead offering rambling and nonsensical statements.
He read the entire post from Trump on Truth Social, pointing out the strong and critical language the former president used when referring to Reiner’s passing.
Kimmel described the post as “incredibly hateful and disgusting,” and admitted he first believed it was a hoax. He said, “Even for that person, it seemed extreme, but there’s no limit to what they’ll do.”
The host also took issue with Trump’s refusal to walk back his comments during a press conference, instead repeating them. Trump described director Rob Reiner as someone he strongly disliked, saying, “I wasn’t a fan of him at all… He became like a deranged person. Trump derangement syndrome. So, I was not a fan of Rob Reiner at all, in any way, shape or form. I thought he was very bad for our country.” In response, the host sharply criticized Trump, stating, “That corroded brain is in charge of our lives. If you voted for that, it’s okay to reconsider. It’s perfectly fine.”
Jimmy Kimmel urged his audience to keep criticizing Trump’s actions, referencing his own experiences with Rob Reiner. He explained that Reiner would want them to consistently highlight Trump’s harmful and reckless statements, and that they should continue doing so until people fully recognize the problem. “I know from my personal interactions with Rob Reiner that he would want us to keep pointing out the loathsome atrocities that continue to ooze out of this sick and irresponsible man’s mouth. So we’re going to do that over and over again until the rest of us wake up,” he said.
Stephen Colbert wasn’t the only late-night host to mention Rob Reiner’s passing. He began his show by acknowledging the sadness of the Reiner family’s loss, along with other recent tragedies, and explained that some events are simply too upsetting to make light of.
Director Rob Reiner, 78, and his wife, Michele, 68, were found dead with stab wounds at their home in Brentwood on Sunday. Their 32-year-old son, Nick Reiner, was arrested by the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department and is being held on suspicion of murder. Los Angeles Police Chief Jim McDonnell called the situation a “very tragic incident.” Authorities are still investigating, and no formal charges have been filed yet.
This troubling event, along with Donald Trump’s divisive statements, has led to a broad conversation about what makes a good leader, the importance of understanding others, and the duties of those in public office.
