Disney has cancelled its planned remake of Holes for Disney+. The series, which would have updated the story with gender-swapped characters, will not be moving forward.
Disney+ has decided not to move forward with its planned pilot for a series based on the book Holes, reports Deadline. The show was going to be a fresh take on the 1998 novel—and the 2003 film—and would have featured a female protagonist.
The project was well underway, with writers already working on it and financial incentives secured, but Disney decided the new version wasn’t good enough to move forward.

What the Canceled Holes Reboot Was About
The updated version of Holes features Shay Rudolph (from The Baby-Sitters Club) as Hayley, a teenager sent to a strict detention camp. There, she and other campers are forced to dig holes all day under the supervision of a harsh Warden, played by Greg Kinnear.
The show featured a talented cast including Aidy Bryant, Flor Delis Alicea, Anire Kim Amoda, Noah Cottrell, Iesha Daniels, Sophie Dieterlen, Alexandra Doke, and Maeve Press.
Let’s talk about who brought this vision to life. Alina Mankin penned the pilot, and Liz Phang skillfully steered the whole show as showrunner. It’s great to see some heavy hitters involved – Drew Goddard and Sarah Esberg were on board as executive producers, alongside the original producer of the Holes movie, Mike Medavoy. Walden Media and Shamrock, who hold the rights, also lent their support, and 20th Television handled the studio side of things. A solid team all around, promising a faithful yet fresh adaptation.

High Expectations, No Series Order
Even though Disney Branded Entertainment was optimistic about the show’s potential, the reboot didn’t get made. Fortunately, the tax credits that had been approved can be used for different projects instead.
This decision shows Disney is moving away from remakes that drastically change well-known stories, as the company re-evaluates its plans for Disney+.
Disney+ Shifts Focus
Disney Branded Television is sticking with proven successes. The show Percy Jackson and the Olympians has quickly been renewed for a third season after airing its second, and Disney is also developing a new pilot called Eerie Prep, which is based on the Eerie Elementary book series.
For now, Holes joins the growing list of Disney+ projects that never made it past the pilot stage.
