We at TopMob love when different passions come together, so we were excited to hear about “Birth + Carnage,” a new dance performance in NYC. It combines dance, the study of space, and visual art. We’ve always been fascinated by space, and it’s amazing to see how understanding the universe can inspire beautiful art. Created by choreographer Marla Phelan and astrophysicist Dr. Blakesley Burkhart, the performance uses the birth of stars as both a powerful idea and a structure for the dance. We think it’s a moving experience that will make you think about your place in the universe.
Phelan describes “Birth + Carnage” as being inspired by the creation of stars, using this process as both a powerful idea and the basis for the dance’s structure. She explains that the piece blurs the boundary between audience and performer, creating a fully immersive experience. It’s not just a performance to watch; it’s a vibrant combination of dance, video, and music that feels like a living thing. Audiences can expect a dynamic and captivating world that’s both intense and original, and truly pulls you into the experience. It sounds like a chance to feel connected to something much larger than ourselves.
So, what is Birth + Carnage actually like? It’s a dance performance featuring a group of dancers moving in front of a huge digital display. This creates a dynamic interplay between the dance and the visuals, exploring themes of creation and feeling. The performance is designed to reflect the cycles of birth and growth found throughout the universe, and to connect those vast cosmic processes with our own human experiences and relationships. As the creators put it, it’s a journey into a space where the biggest ideas about the universe meet the most intimate parts of being human.
What truly resonates with us is the potential for spiritual impact. Phelan hopes Birth + Carnage will connect with people on a subconscious level, leaving them with a refreshed appreciation for the miraculous nature of everything. He believes that creating anything takes significant effort and dedication. The work aims to immerse audiences in a vast, cosmic space, encouraging them to consider the connections between the universe and our world. Phelan hopes it will inspire a sense of renewal, much like how we’ve always used stars to find our way, and help people find their own bearings.

And we could all use a little reorientation, to be sure.
You can see “Birth + Carnage” at La MaMa Experimental Theatre Club in New York City from December 19th to 21st, 2025. Tickets are on sale now.
