It’s better to have something happen eventually than not at all, and I’ve been curious about the Voltron movie Henry Cavill was involved with. It’s been months without any updates, which is a little concerning.
I found a YouTuber talking about a leaked early test screening of the film, which apparently revealed some new details.
I have fond memories of the original toys, and I still own my vintage Lions and Voltron figures. Seeing what Amazon is doing with Masters of the Universe worries me, because it feels very similar to the direction they took with Voltron – it just seems silly.
Note: Possible spoilers follow.

Source “loved it”
About two months ago, YouTuber Mr H Reviews reported that a test screening of Amazon’s live-action Voltron movie received positive feedback, giving fans their first real look at the film. He believes his sources are reliable.
The movie has been in the works for a while now. Initially, reports indicated it would be released directly on Amazon Prime Video, skipping movie theaters. However, the producers later clarified that they hadn’t yet made a final decision about how it would be released.
According to Mr. H Reviews, a source indicates the film will be released on streaming, which he feels would be disappointing. Although it’s not expected to be an awards contender, his source really enjoyed the movie.

A Sequel To The Original 1980s Cartoon
According to leaked information, the new Voltron series isn’t a remake, but a continuation of the original 1980s cartoon. It’s expected to include many nods, hidden references, and connections to the show’s original story.
The story follows a new war erupting across the galaxy. It pits the peaceful Galaxy Alliance against the Galra, a conquering alien race who have just released their long-imprisoned leader, Emperor Zarkon, portrayed by Sterling K. Brown.
With war declared, the legendary defender Voltron is needed once again.
Just like the original cartoon, Voltron is created when five robotic lions combine, and this version is piloted by a new team of young heroes from across the galaxy.
After years of being inactive since Zarkon’s fall and scattered throughout the galaxy, the powerful lions are reactivated, calling out to a new group of pilots from all corners of the universe.

Earth-Born Hero And Pilot Training
The movie centers around Mac, a young man who lives on Earth and finds one of the Voltron lions hidden in a cave close to his house.
He quickly discovers a surprising family link to the machine: his parent was one of the original Voltron pilots. These pilots – Keith, Lance, Hunk, Pidge, and Sven – were all humans from Earth who flew the lions that formed Voltron.
According to a recent leak, Mac’s curiosity and adventurous spirit lead him to follow a signal from a lion, which unexpectedly transports him across the galaxy to join the fight against Zarcon.
The movie mainly shows the new pilots learning to work as a team and train to combine into Voltron, highlighting the challenges they face along the way.
The show has a deliberately over-the-top, playful tone. Think of the energy of Power Rangers combined with the action of Top Gun: Maverick, but featuring massive robots instead of planes.
According to someone who watched the cartoon as a child, the movie is lighthearted and enjoyable, designed for families, and includes plenty of humor. They described it as ‘silly stuff’ but in a positive way, saying they ‘really found it great’.

Henry Cavill’s Role And Sword Fight Scene
Henry Cavill is said to appear as a key supporting character – the son of Princess Allura and the king of the planet Altean. In the original series, his character would have been King Aflor’s grandson.
Henry Cavill is reportedly an important part of the Galaxy Alliance, likely because Altean serves as the headquarters for the Voltron Force.
Although Henry Cavill isn’t the lead, he delivers some memorable performances, especially a sword fight that particularly impressed one reviewer.
The positive reaction also mentioned that Cavill’s performance increased their anticipation for him to star in the new Highlander movie.

Villains Steal The Show
Many people believe the villains are the best part of the film, and they’re a particular standout element.
Sterling K. Brown’s Emperor Zarkon is described as heavily prosthetic-based and intimidating.

Just as I thought, Rita Ora is playing Haggar the Dark Witch, and she’s almost completely transformed! She’s covered in makeup to look like the character and delivers most of her lines with a hissing sound.
“She seems to be having fun alongside Sterling K. Brown as Emperor Zarcon,” says the source.
The Galra forces themselves were compared to “the orcs from Lord of the Rings, but in space.”

Rough Effects, Big Potential
Because this was a rough-cut test screening, the visual effects were unfinished.
Still, fully rendered shots of Voltron reportedly looked faithful to the original design.
After watching the film, our source enjoyed it and felt it was a solid piece of entertainment. While they don’t expect it to be an awards contender, they emphasized that it has a scope and quality that goes beyond typical streaming movies.
The source “couldn’t imagine seeing Voltron in full glory on anything other than a big screen.”

Amazon Streaming Or Theaters?
If a recent report is true, Amazon might be adding Voltron to its collection of revived classic shows and franchises.
Based on early reactions, releasing this as a streaming-only title might not fully showcase its potential as an exciting science fiction event, particularly for those who enjoyed the original show.
Still, red flags are present as it sounds like another IP made goofy for the modern audience.
For now, Amazon has not officially commented on the film’s release plans.
We might see a trailer and announcement for Voltron this summer at San Diego Comic-Con, potentially pointing to a release in 2027.
