The first look at the upcoming Supergirl movie was released today, kicking off the film’s marketing campaign before its theatrical release on June 26th.
The first showing of the footage happened at a private event in New York City, where the actors and filmmakers discussed their new approach to the story of Kara Zor-El.
This new Supergirl movie presents a fresh take on the character, quite different from what longtime fans might expect. It follows Kara as a young woman constantly on the move, living a somewhat unstable life. The story starts after a difficult birthday leaves her feeling adrift, and she unexpectedly finds herself in a fight. When she decides to help a girl named Ruthye, she’s drawn into a perilous journey.
Ana Nogueira’s script draws inspiration from the Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow comic book, particularly emphasizing Kara’s internal emotional journey.

Director Craig Gillespie explained that this new Supergirl movie isn’t a typical hero’s journey. He described it as more of an ‘anti-hero’ story, with Supergirl carrying a lot of personal struggles and past issues, making her very different from Superman who is generally seen as a classic, unwavering hero.
James Gunn, the co-head of DC Studios alongside Peter Safran, shared his reasoning behind this creative choice. He pointed out that female superheroes are often portrayed as flawless, and this new character is different. He explained that male superheroes have long been given the freedom to be imperfect, and he wants to extend that same allowance to female heroes.
In the preview, Kara points out the contrast between herself and Superman, explaining that while he always looks for the best in people, she focuses on what’s real.
Previous efforts to bring Supergirl to the screen haven’t worked out, but James Gunn and Peter Safran are optimistic about new possibilities.
James Gunn told The Hollywood Reporter he believes DC is moving in the right direction, simply stating, “Oh, yeah.” Peter Safran added that the studio has made significant progress since the beginning of the year.
