James Gunn on Supergirl
James Gunn has consistently highlighted that this new Supergirl is a significant departure from previous interpretations. He explained that while Superman had a nurturing upbringing on Earth from birth, Kara spent her early childhood – the first fourteen years of her life – on a crumbling piece of Krypton, witnessing hardship and violence before reaching Earth. This starkly different background fundamentally defines her character. Gunn says she’s much tougher and more intense than the Supergirl most people are familiar with.
Gunn described the Supergirl movie as a fast-paced and energetic film, contrasting it with the more polished Superman stories. He explained that this version of Kara Zor-El is a complex character, still dealing with difficult past experiences that Superman didn’t have to face. The movie fully embraces her struggles while offering a grand, space-based adventure, staying true to the comic book source material. Gunn is confident the film will offer a fresh perspective on the superhero genre and is eager for audiences to see it.

Behind the movie
Peter Safran and James Gunn, who are leading DC Studios, are producing the upcoming Supergirl movie. The film is based on DC characters originally created by Jerry Siegel and Joe Shuster.
Nigel Gostelow, Chantal Nong Vo, and Lars P. Winther served as executive producers on the film. The crew also included Rob Hardy as director of photography, Neil Lamont as production designer, Tatiana S. Riegel as editor, Anna B. Sheppard as costume designer, Geoffrey Baumann as visual effects supervisor, and Ramin Djawadi, who composed the music.
Release Date
DC Studios and Troll Court Entertainment present Supergirl, a film directed by Craig Gillespie, coming to theaters and IMAX screens across North America on June 26, 2026, and to international audiences starting June 24, 2026. It will be distributed by Warner Bros. Pictures.
