Amanda Seyfried is discussing the backlash she received after commenting on a post about Charlie Kirk on Instagram last September. She called him “hateful” in response to the post, and she says the online reaction quickly became overwhelming.
She told Who What Wear she briefly considered deleting her comment, but ultimately decided against it. Afterwards, friends reached out with concerned messages, and she spent a restless night worrying about the potential impact on her family.
The next day, Seyfried felt better about speaking her mind. Instead of avoiding the issue, she chose to discuss it directly on her Instagram account.
She firmly defended her statements, stating she had no intention of apologizing. She explained that her comment was based on verifiable facts, footage, and direct quotes, and she felt entitled to her opinion.
She said she reposted to clarify her original message and ensure people understood her intent. She felt her voice had been taken and twisted, which she acknowledged is something people often do.
Seyfried mentioned she was thinking about politics during the interview. She found it unsettling to be relaxing in a restaurant knowing that millions of Americans were about to lose their food assistance due to the government shutdown.
She expressed her frustration with the current political climate, saying it felt strange to continue with daily life amidst so much turmoil. She specifically mentioned feeling troubled by the success of people she considered manipulative and damaging, citing the president as a prime example. She also admitted that dwelling on these issues could be incredibly overwhelming, explaining that overthinking things could lead to intense distress and a feeling of disbelief about the state of the world.
She believes apologies are only necessary if you’ve actually hurt someone. As she put it, she doesn’t feel she needs to apologize unless her actions cause emotional, physical, or mental harm.
Despite everything going on around her, she focuses on staying practical and handling her everyday tasks. She explained, “Things are getting really difficult, but I need to stay focused, catch my train, and promote my films. A lot of people are counting on me to get the word out about this movie.”
