As a huge anime fan, I’ve noticed something really cool happening lately. We all love rooting for the heroes, but sometimes the villains are just so interesting, you want to know what makes them tick. That’s why I’m loving these spin-off shows that basically tell the villain’s life story! It’s amazing to see these characters – who used to just be the ‘bad guys’ – dealing with everyday problems or learning about what turned them into villains in the first place. Sometimes it’s funny, like seeing them manage their evil empires, and sometimes it’s really sad and explains how they ended up on the dark path. It just proves that even the villains have stories that deserve to be told!
‘A Certain Scientific Accelerator’ (2019)

Accelerator begins the story of ‘A Certain Magical Index’ as a powerful and dangerous villain. The series then focuses on his life after a head injury, showing how he unexpectedly becomes the protector of a young girl named Last Order. We see his transformation from a ruthless enemy into a conflicted anti-hero, using his incredible, but often frightening, abilities to help those who can’t defend themselves. The story also explores his thoughts and feelings as he slowly accepts his new role as a guardian.
‘Magic Kaito 1412’ (2014)

Kaito Kid is a frequent opponent of Conan Edogawa in the ‘Detective Conan’ series. The show explores Kaito’s double life as both a high school student and a skilled magician, detailing his complex plans for robberies and his search for a particular jewel. This quest is motivated by a desire to thwart a dangerous criminal group, and the series reveals that Kaito’s actions, though often seen as villainous, are frequently based on good intentions that Conan and his friends aren’t aware of.
‘Kakegurui Twin’ (2022)

Mary Saotome is first introduced as a confident and competitive opponent in the main ‘Kakegurui’ story. This prequel shows what her first year at Hyakkaou Private Academy was like, before she became cynical. It follows her introduction to the school’s intense gambling world and her efforts to stay on top despite challenges from the student council. The series focuses on her sharp mind and the experiences that led her to become so determined and competitive.
‘Thus Spoke Kishibe Rohan’ (2017–2021)

Rohan Kishibe started as a villain in ‘JoJo’s Bizarre Adventure: Diamond is Unbreakable,’ but later became a friend. This series of stories follows his life as a manga artist who finds ideas by investigating strange, supernatural happenings. It’s like reading a travel journal or diary, detailing his encounters with the bizarre and how he uses his special abilities to get through them. Each episode highlights his inquisitive nature and his own distinct sense of right and wrong.
‘Mobile Suit Gundam: The Origin’ (2015–2018)

As a longtime fan of the Gundam universe, I was genuinely captivated by this series. It finally gives us the full story of Char Aznable, or rather, Casval Rem Deikun, the man behind the Red Comet persona. It’s not just action; it’s a deep dive into his origins, showing us the political machinations and heartbreaking losses that drove him to seek revenge against the Zabi family. Essentially, it’s a fantastic character study – a real look at how a displaced prince became the iconic, masked pilot we all know.
‘Yatterman Night’ (2015)

In the original ‘Yatterman’ series, the Doronbo Gang were the funny bad guys. This new show follows their great-grandchildren, who have fallen on hard times and been forced into exile. It tells the story of their fight against the Yatterman Kingdom, which has become a cruel and unfair place. The show cleverly changes perspectives, making the former villains the heroes we root for as they struggle for what’s right.
‘Magi: Adventure of Sinbad’ (2016)

This story follows Sinbad’s journey from a life of poverty to becoming a powerful ruler. It details his adventures as he conquers dungeons, builds a successful trading company, and ultimately becomes the High King of the Seven Seas. While showcasing his captivating personality and drive, the story also hints at the manipulative tendencies that would later define his role as a villain in the main ‘Magi’ series.
‘Saint Seiya: Soul of Gold’ (2015)

In the original ‘Saint Seiya’ series, the Gold Saints were powerful enemies. This new series brings them back, but this time they must team up to fight a different threat. It’s a story about these once-proud warriors finding redemption by fighting for something bigger than their previous allegiance. The series allows each Gold Saint to have their moment in the spotlight and reveals more about who they are beyond just being temple guardians.
‘The Disappearance of Nagato Yuki-chan’ (2015)

Yuki Nagato began as a quiet, alien observer in the film ‘The Disappearance of Haruhi Suzumiya.’ This new story is set in a different version of events, following that movie’s ending, where she’s simply a shy girl. It shows what her everyday life is like, including her first experiences with romance, in a world where nothing supernatural happens. The series offers a sweet and touching glimpse into the ordinary life she always longed for.
‘Lupin the Third: The Woman Called Fujiko Mine’ (2012)

Fujiko Mine is usually portrayed as someone who competes with or betrays Lupin III, rather than being a true teammate. This series delves into her past, showing her life as a skilled thief and spy, and exploring the difficult experiences that made her the independent woman she is. It’s presented as a dark and stylish diary of her early adventures, and its serious mood is quite different from the more playful stories of Lupin and his crew.
‘Fate/kaleid liner Prisma Illya’ (2013)

Illyasviel von Einzbern is known as a powerful and cruel enemy in ‘Fate/stay night’. This new series offers a fresh take on her story, portraying her as an ordinary elementary school student who gets caught up in collecting special cards. It follows her fun adventures and friendships in a world where she doesn’t have to face a dark fate. This version lets fans see a happy and carefree side of a character who was once defined by hardship.
‘Black Lagoon: Roberta’s Blood Trail’ (2010–2011)

Roberta is a fearsome villain in ‘Black Lagoon,’ often called the ‘Terminator maid.’ This spin-off series details her brutal quest for revenge after her boss is murdered. It’s a violent story of her spiraling descent into madness and the devastation she causes while tracking down those responsible. The series delves into her damaged mind and showcases her deadly skills as a trained soldier.
