Fighting games love to shake things up by adding characters from totally unexpected worlds. These guest appearances can make a lot of sense, or they can be really bizarre and confusing. Sometimes, developers choose these characters for the surprise factor or to promote another brand, even if it doesn’t quite fit the game’s style. This leads to some funny situations where you have characters who seem completely out of place alongside the usual martial arts experts. Here’s a look at some of the most unusual characters to ever compete in a fighting game.
Gon

The fighting game ‘Tekken 3’ featured a small dinosaur character named Gon, who first appeared in a well-known Japanese comic. Because he’s so small, it’s very hard for opponents to land hits on him with typical attacks. Gon attacks by breathing fire and using his tail to sweep opponents off balance. Some serious players asked for him to be removed from competition because his small size gave him an unfair advantage and disrupted the game’s balance.
Negan Smith

Negan, the notorious villain from ‘The Walking Dead’, is now a playable character in ‘Tekken 7’. He brings his iconic barbed wire bat, Lucille, and his signature intimidating style to the fighting game. Bandai Namco shocked fans by adding a character from live-action television to the martial arts tournament. His moves in the game reflect his on-screen personality, focusing on powerful, intimidating attacks and brutal swings.
Yoda

Yoda from Star Wars was a special character available only on the Xbox 360 version of ‘Soulcalibur IV’. Because he’s small, opponents can’t grab him, and he’s difficult to hit with overhead attacks. He makes up for his short reach with quick lightsaber strikes and Force-powered jumps. However, many felt his inclusion didn’t quite fit, as a futuristic laser sword seemed out of place alongside traditional medieval weapons.
Box Art Mega Man

The game ‘Street Fighter X Tekken’ features a comical version of Mega Man inspired by the widely criticized North American box art from the original NES game. Instead of the popular, streamlined robotic design, this Mega Man is portrayed as an out-of-shape man wearing a loose blue suit. He fights with a pistol instead of his signature arm cannon and appears constantly breathless. Capcom added this version as a self-aware nod to the infamous marketing mistake.
Phoenix Wright

The lawyer from the ‘Ace Attorney’ series is a playable character in ‘Ultimate Marvel vs. Capcom 3’, and his fighting style is hilariously unique. Instead of punches and kicks, he attacks with legal arguments and evidence, shouting objections and uncontrollably sneezing while performing combos. Players need to collect evidence during the fight to deliver a devastating final blow. The sheer absurdity of seeing a lawyer in a suit battling cosmic beings like Galactus makes for some truly funny moments.
Norimaro

Okay, so I recently found out something really interesting about the old ‘Marvel Super Heroes vs. Street Fighter’ game. There’s this hilarious character, Norimaro, a Japanese comedian, and he’s basically me when I meet my heroes! He’s totally starstruck, running around begging for autographs and even chucking school supplies at characters like Hulk and Ryu! Apparently, Marvel didn’t love the joke and actually asked Capcom to take him out of the game when it was released outside of Japan. It’s funny because he’s the only normal human in a game full of super-powered beings – no powers, just pure fandom!
Link

Link, known as the Hero of Time, became a playable character in ‘Soulcalibur II’ on the GameCube, wielding his iconic Master Sword. He fights by using his boomerang and bow to keep opponents at a distance, and defends with his shield. While the crossover felt a bit strange for Nintendo fans, it worked well with the game’s focus on weapon-based combat. Link remains a major reason why the GameCube version of ‘Soulcalibur II’ is so popular.
Freddy Krueger

The 2011 ‘Mortal Kombat’ game added a terrifying, dream-demon character as downloadable content. This character, equipped with two clawed gloves, could teleport and pull opponents into burning traps. His appearance proved popular and paved the way for other horror movie villains to join the game in future installments. Back then, it was surprisingly exciting to see a classic movie monster deliver a finishing move on a ninja.
Noctis Lucis Caelum

As a huge fan of both series, I was so excited to see Noctis from ‘Final Fantasy XV’ join ‘Tekken 7’! It’s awesome seeing him bring his signature weapons and warping powers to the fighting game world. He can pull out different royal arms to attack from afar, and his teleport ability is a game-changer – seriously, you have to rethink how you defend against him! It’s a really unique crossover, bringing a hero from a role-playing game into the 3D fighting arena, and it’s just plain cool.
Rash

As a fighting game fan, I was so hyped when ‘Killer Instinct’ brought ‘Battletoads’ back into the spotlight! They did it by adding Rash as a guest character in season three, and he plays just like you’d expect. He can still turn his arms and legs into huge axes and wrecking balls, just like the old NES games. It’s awesome seeing him ride across the screen on that speeder bike, running over opponents with his special moves. Honestly, his over-the-top, cartoonish violence really stands out because the rest of the ‘Killer Instinct’ characters are way more serious and gritty.
