Gwyneth Paltrow often divides opinion, but after thirty years in the film industry, she’s undoubtedly a Hollywood icon. This was recently recognized with the Sherry Lansing Leadership Award. According to The Hollywood Reporter, the award was presented by her Marvel Cinematic Universe co-star and close friend, Robert Downey Jr. He playfully teased her during his speech, joking about her tendency to forget which Marvel films she appeared in, and even which fellow actors she’s worked with.
Robert Downey Jr. playfully described a friend as incredibly smart but surprisingly clueless about the Marvel Cinematic Universe. He recounted an instance where she didn’t recognize an actor on set, even after he explained it was Tom Holland, who plays Spider-Man, and that they’d worked together on four films. Gwyneth Paltrow has recently become a social media sensation due to interview clips showing she doesn’t recall being in several MCU movies, most notably forgetting her cameo in Spider-Man: Homecoming.
Robert Downey Jr., playfully teasing Gwyneth Paltrow about her wellness brand, also criticized the media’s tendency to label her as “polarizing.” He argued that the term is unfairly used against successful women who consistently remain relevant and reinvent themselves. He didn’t acknowledge Paltrow’s appearance in Avengers: Doomsday, but likely assumes she’s forgotten filming her scenes as Pepper Potts anyway.
