For a long time, transgender characters in movies were often shown as either victims or jokes. Now, we’re seeing a shift towards more complex and realistic portrayals of trans people as fully developed individuals. Audiences today want to see stories where being transgender is just one part of a character’s life, not the entire focus. Filmmakers are starting to move beyond stories solely about transitioning and are instead including trans characters in all kinds of genres – horror, comedy, action – simply living their lives. This helps create more compelling stories that focus on the plot and relatable human experiences, rather than constantly explaining or justifying a character’s identity. The films that follow showcase trans characters who are allowed to just be without needing to prove themselves to the audience.

It’s a story focused on the intense relationships between the characters, rather than their gender identities.
‘Barbie’ (2023)

As a movie fan, I was really struck by Barbieland. It’s amazing how they’ve built this world where Barbies can be anything – doctors, lawyers, presidents – and it just is. Like, Doctor Barbie is a fully realized physician, and the movie doesn’t bother with a backstory explaining how she got there, which I loved. It feels so natural within that world. And Hari Nef as Doctor Barbie? Total perfection. She brings this incredible energy that just fits the movie’s upbeat vibe.

Hayley plays a part in encouraging the others to take increasingly dangerous chances with the supernatural. The scary parts come from the group’s impulsive actions, not from disagreements about who they are as individuals.
