Daniel Kaluuya Teases Spider-Verse Spinoff in the Works

Daniel Kaluuya revealed he’s working on a new animated movie set in the Spider-Verse, starring his Spider-Punk character.

Daniel Kaluuya, known for his roles in Get Out and Black Panther, recently told Deadline that he and his writing partner, Ajon Singh, are almost finished with the first draft of their animated movie, which Sony is producing. He shared the update while at the Red Sea Studio in Jeddah, Saudi Arabia.

When asked about the movie, Kaluuya stated, “We’re still working on it.” He didn’t share any details about the story or say whether other characters from the Spider-Verse would be included, only saying, “To be determined.”

The popularity of Daniel Kaluuya’s portrayal of Spider-Punk (Hobie Brown) in the 2023 animated film Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse led to plans for a dedicated Spider-Punk movie. Spider-Punk is a different take on the Spider-Man character and will also be featured in the next Spider-Man: Beyond the Spider-Verse film.

“I’m really excited to be working on this,” Kaluuya shared. He spoke highly of Phil Lord and Christopher Miller, the team behind the Spider-Verse movies, describing them as talented storytellers and strong supporters of the new project.

Daniel Kaluuya has expressed great admiration for the Spider-Verse movies. He said he found them incredibly inspiring, praising the filmmakers and animators as exceptional storytellers. Kaluuya wants to work on projects that will allow him to learn from their talent and further develop his own skills.

He shared a key insight from a colleague, Lord, while discussing the project: “Movies aren’t focused on individuals, but on the connections between people. They also capture the pure enjoyment of filmmaking – the storytelling and animation – and that feeling of joy is really difficult to achieve, but it’s something he strives for. Ultimately, audiences connect with the passion the filmmakers have for their work.”

Hobart Brown is the real name of Spider-Punk, a character who originally appeared in Marvel Comics. He was created by Dan Slott and Olivier Coipel.

This Spider-Man is inspired by punk rock and battles enemies like President Norman Osborn, V.E.N.O.M., and the Inheritors. The character, Hobart, started as a homeless teenager who gained powers from a radioactive spider and became Spider-Punk, rallying the people of New York against Osborn’s army.

I was so excited to see Daniel Kaluuya debut as Spider-Punk in Across the Spider-Verse, and I’m even more thrilled to hear he’ll be back for Beyond the Spider-Verse! Apparently, they’re planning a whole spinoff movie just to dive deeper into his character and give us a dedicated, animated adventure focusing on Spider-Punk. I can’t wait to see what they do with it!
