Netflix is kicking off December with a ton of new movies and shows, including both brand new releases and popular titles returning to the service. There’s something for everyone – from gripping dramas and funny holiday comedies to suspenseful thrillers – perfect for settling in this season. You’ll find exciting original films and well-regarded movies from around the world. Here are some of the best picks to start watching right away.
‘Jay Kelly’ (2025)

Noah Baumbach’s new film is a funny and moving story about a well-known actor, played by George Clooney, who’s questioning his life and career. He suddenly leaves a movie shoot and goes on a journey through Europe to reconnect with his daughter. His agent, Adam Sandler, and publicist desperately try to keep up with him, hoping to prevent a PR disaster. The film cleverly mixes humor with heartfelt moments as it examines the challenges of fame and the weight of past mistakes.
‘Troll 2’ (2025)

As a huge fan of the first film, I was really excited for this Norwegian sequel! It throws you right back into that incredible world of trolls and Norse mythology, but this time with a threat that’s even bigger and more terrifying. The story follows Nora Tidemann, a paleontologist who gets pulled back into the action when a massive troll starts causing chaos all over Norway. She has to work with the government and the army to figure out where these giants come from and how to stop it. Honestly, it builds on everything I loved about the original, with even more spectacular visuals and some seriously impressive creature effects. It’s a wild ride!
‘The New Yorker at 100’ (2025)

Director Marshall Curry’s documentary provides a rare glimpse into the world of a legendary American magazine. The film follows the publication through its 100th year, showing the everyday work of the people who create it – the editors, writers, and cartoonists. It’s a behind-the-scenes look at how each week’s issue is made, from the initial idea to the final printed copy, and celebrates both excellent reporting and the importance of a strong literary tradition.
‘Matt Rife: Unwrapped: A Christmas Crowd Work Special’ (2025)

Comedian Matt Rife’s holiday special, filmed in Arizona, features his trademark style of interacting with the audience. Instead of telling prepared jokes, he talks directly to the crowd about their funny and awkward holiday experiences – everything from terrible gifts to family traditions gone wrong. This creates a spontaneous and unpredictable show, offering a unique festive experience for his fans.
‘My Secret Santa’ (2025)

Alexandra Breckenridge plays a single mom who will do anything to help her daughter achieve her snowboarding goals. In this charming Christmas movie, she takes a job as Santa at a ski resort – but disguises herself as an older man to get it! Things get even more interesting when she starts to fall for the resort owner’s son. It’s a feel-good story with a fun premise, blending familiar comedy tropes with heartfelt family moments, making it a perfect cozy watch for the holidays.
‘I Wish You Had Told Me’ (2025)

This Filipino drama centers on Seph, a young missionary who discovers a surprising secret about his deceased father. He journeys to Spain seeking answers about his father’s past and a past love affair. Along the way, Seph is challenged to re-examine his own values and the unspoken truths within his family. The story is a moving look at dealing with loss, finding peace, and the complicated bonds between parents and children.
‘Sew Torn’ (2025)

A seamstress who works on the go gets caught up in a dangerous crime after accidentally witnessing a drug deal gone bad. The movie cleverly shows three different ways the story could unfold, all based on the choices she makes in crucial moments. She must use her sewing abilities and tools to outsmart a group of dangerous criminals in a thrilling chase, and the film is full of unexpected twists and a darkly comedic tone that will keep you on the edge of your seat.
‘Mean Girls’ (2024)

Okay, so “Mean Girls” is back, but this time as a musical! And honestly, it totally works. The story follows Cady Heron, a girl who’s new to high school after growing up in Kenya, and she has to figure out the whole complicated world of cliques – especially the super-popular Plastics. It’s packed with fun, catchy songs, but thankfully doesn’t lose any of the original movie’s hilarious moments and famous lines. This version feels really current and energetic, giving a fresh take on the classic high school story of popularity, backstabbing, and trying to find your place.
‘The Northman’ (2022)

Robert Eggers’ new film is a powerfully raw and immersive Viking saga about a prince driven by revenge for his father’s death. Starring Alexander Skarsgård alongside a talented ensemble cast, the movie is a brutal and captivating exploration of Viking lore and beliefs. Stunning visuals showcase the wild beauty of the settings, while the story examines themes of destiny and instinct. It’s a gripping and atmospheric retelling of the Amleth legend.
‘Cast Away’ (2000)

Tom Hanks delivers an incredible performance as a FedEx employee who survives a plane crash and finds himself alone on a deserted island. The movie follows his four-year struggle to stay alive, both physically and emotionally, as he deals with complete isolation. Known for having very little dialogue, the film beautifully portrays the connection he makes with a volleyball named Wilson, and ultimately celebrates the strength of the human spirit.
