Watch ‘Stranger Things’ Cast Being Stunned by Will Byers Twist During Table Read

Viewers of Stranger Things were surprised when Will Byers revealed a powerful new ability at the conclusion of the first part of Season 5.

In the episode “Sorcerer,” the fight against Vecna and the monsters from the Upside Down becomes incredibly dangerous. When Demogorgons corner Mike, Lucas, and Robin, Will unexpectedly reveals hidden abilities and saves them.

He can perceive the world as the Demogorgons do, allowing him to defeat them – even breaking their limbs to protect his friends. The last scene of the first part of the season shows Will with a nosebleed, looking with the same focused intensity we usually see in Eleven.

A video posted on X showed the actors reacting to a surprising plot twist, and they looked genuinely shocked and thrilled.

The Duffer brothers, who created the show, have explained that Will’s developing powers aren’t the same as Eleven’s. Ross Duffer stated that Will is actually drawing his abilities directly from Vecna. While both Vecna and Eleven have powers that come from within themselves, Will’s powers manifest as if he’s being controlled like a puppet.

In this episode, Vecna refers to the children as “perfect vessels,” and tells Will that he was his first target. He explains that Will was easily broken, but that experience showed Vecna what he was capable of. Despite Vecna’s words, Will remembers happy moments like his friendship with Mike, time spent with Joyce, and building Castle Byers with Jonathan. These memories give him the strength to fight back, using the abilities he gained from Vecna himself.

So, the Duffer Brothers finally shed some light on Will’s abilities, and it all comes down to his connection to the Upside Down. Apparently, he needs to be physically close to that central hive mind – think Vecna’s influence – to actually use those powers. The closer he is to something like a Demogorgon, the stronger he is. But get too far away, and those powers just…fade. There’s a limit to how far he can be and still tap into that connection, which explains a lot about what we’ve seen throughout the series.

This development gives Will an unexpected and important part to play in the story. Unlike Eleven and Vecna, who can use their powers whenever they want, Will’s abilities are connected to the creatures nearby. This creates a fascinating situation as the season continues, leaving viewers curious about the full extent of Will’s powers and the obstacles he’ll encounter.
