DC Shake-Up Explodes: Gunn Sidelined As De Luca Takes Control (Exclusive)

After a recent report in Puck News, sources I’ve spoken with indicate that James Gunn’s time at DC is already over.

Sources say Paramount executives bypassed James Gunn and traveled to Prague to meet with Zach Cregger, the director of Weapons, while he was filming a Resident Evil movie. They wanted to discuss his ideas for a DC project.

De Luca and Abdy, Not Gunn, Are the Ones Who Brought In Cregger

As sources close to the situation have shared with me, Zach Cregger was brought to Warner Bros. by Mike De Luca and Pam Abdy, the leaders of WB Films.

The movie Weapons was a big success, just like Minecraft. De Luca started dating the sequel to Man of Tomorrow only two weeks after Gunn’s film came out.

De Luca and Abdy have both been given new contracts. However, James Gunn’s contract will expire next year and hasn’t been renewed.

De Luca’s Original DC Plans

Sources close to the situation revealed that after Zack Snyder finished his work on the DC universe, De Luca and Abdy are planning a fresh start for the franchise.

I was informed that De Luca’s initial vision for The Flash movie involved reviving the DC Extended Universe, including bringing back Ben Affleck as Batman and Henry Cavill as Superman. The plan also included a large-scale Batman-focused multiverse storyline featuring Michael Keaton reprising his role as Batman.

That all went away when James Gunn launched the DCU.

Gunn’s Creative Style Continues to Clash With Talent

Also recall how my insider said Gunn “isn’t talent friendly and is stubborn about his vision.”

It seems Zach Cregger was scheduled to present his DC movie idea to James Gunn, and that’s currently what’s unfolding.

It’s obvious something shifted, as Paramount went to great lengths – even traveling internationally – to listen to the presentation, and this happened before they finalized their agreement with Warner Bros. Discovery.

Consolidation Under De Luca and Abdy Is Already Beginning

My insider says:

Mike De Luca hired Zach Cregger for the “Weapons” project at Warner Bros., which suggests a broader shift at DC Studios. De Luca and WB’s Pam Abdy will now have more overall control of DC projects.

With the WBD Sale, Gunn Is Out and a New DC Is Forming

Now that Warner Bros. Discovery has been sold, sources say James Gunn is no longer involved, and Zack Snyder is returning to continue his vision for the DC Universe. Mike De Luca and Pam Abdy are expected to oversee a revamped DC Universe, which may already be in the works.

To sum things up:

  • Gunn is out once the WBD sale closes.
  • Paramount is buying WBD and already acting like the new owner.
  • Paramount plans to keep Mike De Luca and Pam Abdy in charge.
  • De Luca and Abdy are the ones who originally brought in Zach Cregger.
  • Paramount traveled across the world to hear Cregger’s DC movie pitch — not Gunn.
  • De Luca previously planned to restore the SnyderVerse before Gunn shut it down.
  • The SnyderVerse returns with the WBD sale.
  • De Luca and Abdy will lead the new DC going forward.
