James Cameron is known for being outspoken, which often sparks debate. However, a recent stance he’s taken is likely to be widely supported. While promoting the new Avatar: Fire and Ash film, Cameron confirmed that no generative AI was used in its creation. Considering the Avatar movies are almost entirely computer-generated, many people were curious if he’d incorporated AI. He recently shared with Comic Book (as reported by Variety) that he did not.
I’m not against generative AI, but we don’t use it in the Avatar films. We value and celebrate actors and have no intention of replacing them. I believe Hollywood will ultimately regulate itself in this area and find a sensible path forward. However, my biggest concern isn’t the use of AI in filmmaking, but the broader, more fundamental threat that large-scale AI poses to artists and their ability to work.
Given James Cameron’s history directing the cautionary Terminator films about the risks of unchecked AI, many expected a strong condemnation of current AI practices. While his current stance may not be as harsh as some might hope, any criticism from the Titanic director is welcome. In a recent interview with CBS Sunday Morning, Cameron expressed strong discomfort with generative AI, stating that the ability to create characters, actors, and entire performances from text prompts is “horrifying.” Many others share his concern, and it’s impactful to hear it voiced by such a prominent filmmaker.
