James Gunn and Peter Safran Might Lose DC Studios Control if Paramount Acquires Warner Bros., Reports Say

If Paramount Skydance purchases Warner Bros., James Gunn and Peter Safran may lose their complete authority over DC Studios.

A new report suggests that Paramount, now under the ownership of David Ellison, is starting to develop its own ideas for the DC Universe. Specifically, discussions are reportedly happening between Weapons director Zach Cregger and Paramount Pictures co-chair Josh Greenstein about a potential project.

After James Gunn proved successful with films like Guardians of the Galaxy and The Suicide Squad, he and Peter Safran were appointed to head DC Studios. Their main objective is to create a shared, interconnected universe of DC films.

This covers both iconic heroes like Superman and Batman, as well as more obscure characters such as Booster Gold and the Creature Commandos.

Currently, any changes that might happen if Paramount were to acquire another company are just speculation. Also, Netflix is reportedly interested in buying Warner Bros., which creates even more doubt about what the future holds for DC Comics properties.

Paramount is interested in Kyle Cregger because his film, Weapons, was a big hit, earning $268 million around the world. He’s also signed on to direct the next Resident Evil movie and a prequel to Weapons focusing on the character Aunt Gladys.

Cregger is also a fan of the DC Universe. He previously wrote a scary movie script based in the DC world, but it didn’t feature any superheroes. He mentioned he hadn’t discussed this with James Gunn, but it demonstrated his enthusiasm for the franchise.

If Paramount Skydance buys a controlling stake, James Gunn and Peter Safran might have less say in the creative direction of the DC Universe. While they’ve gotten the new DC Universe off to a good start, a change in ownership could lead to significant alterations.
