James Cameron Says ‘Avatar: Fire and Ash’ Is AI-Free But He Isn’t Against It: “I’m Not Negative About Generative AI”

In a recent interview with ComicBook, director James Cameron discussed his new film, Avatar: Fire and Ash, and shared his perspective on artificial intelligence. He clarified that generative AI wasn’t used in the making of the movie, but he’s open to the possibility of using it in filmmaking in the future.

Cameron talked about the wider risks of advanced AI, which he refers to as “Big AI.” He explained that people in the field worry about AI becoming misaligned with human goals – a concern sometimes called the “Skynet Problem.” The key is ensuring AI is trained and programmed to prioritize human well-being, but Cameron pointed out a major challenge: deciding what constitutes “human good” is difficult, as people can’t even agree amongst themselves.

As a film buff, I’ve always noticed how stories often highlight this – it’s tough to figure out what’s really best for everyone when you’ve got different countries and belief systems constantly clashing. It creates so much conflict, and finding common ground seems almost impossible, doesn’t it?

Cameron cautioned that the spread of false information is exacerbating the issue. He explained that achieving common ground is impossible without widespread agreement, and we currently lack that agreement, potentially living in a world with very little consensus. He believes that when you add deliberate misinformation to this lack of consensus, it becomes even harder to find solutions quickly, especially with so much money being invested in the problem.

Although Cameron has worries about the broader impact of AI, he believes generative AI is unique and shouldn’t be used to replace artists.

Look, I’m not against generative AI at all! It’s just that when it comes to the Avatar films, we really focus on celebrating and respecting our actors – we’d never replace them. I think Hollywood will figure out how to handle this stuff on its own. My bigger concern isn’t about the creative side of things, it’s the idea that AI could potentially threaten the livelihoods of artists like myself. We need to make sure artists can keep creating!

Avatar: Fire and Ash, free of generative AI, is set to release in theaters on December 19.
