James Gunn Explains What Fans Most Want from DCU Batman

James Gunn is a favorite among fans, and for good reason! He’s remarkably attentive to what viewers want, perhaps more so than any other director or showrunner working today. While occasionally indulging fan theories can be tricky, it’s usually a fun and insightful experience. DC Comics fans especially appreciate having someone leading the films who actually pays attention to their feedback. Recently, Gunn shared what fans are hoping to see with the new DCU Batman, and interestingly, what fans prioritize isn’t necessarily what he considers most important.

In an interview with CBR, James Gunn addressed a fan question about whether the Batman in the DC Universe would have fully white eyes, similar to Deadpool. The fan joked that this was likely Gunn’s most requested idea. Gunn clarified that it’s actually only his third most requested fan suggestion.

James Gunn says when drawing the Bat, the order should be: first the blue and grey suit, then yellow around the bat symbol, and finally the white eyes. Personally, I’d put the white eyes in before the yellow, but I tend to break the rules. However, Gunn clarified that he isn’t overly concerned with these details, especially compared to how much fans care.

He emphasized that the core of a good Batman movie isn’t special effects or gadgets, but a well-written character brought to life by the right actor. Okay, maybe finding the perfect Batman is incredibly important! It’s proven to be a challenge – many Batman films haven’t quite nailed the character’s personality. But let’s be honest, a gritty, realistic Batman with a striking look – think grey, blue, and those iconic white eyes – is something everyone wants to see!
