Anne Hathaway plays Mother Mary and Michaela Coel stars as Sam in the film, with Hunter Schafer appearing as Hilda. Jessica Brown Findlay, Sian Clifford, and FKA Twigs also feature in the cast. The music includes new songs from Charli XCX, Jack Antonoff, and FKA Twigs, and a score composed by Daniel Hart.

“Mother Mary” is a dramatic and emotional story about the complex connection between a singer and a fashion designer.

The movie seems to focus on a withdrawn costume designer (Coel) and a musician who’s fallen from grace (Hathaway). They used to work together, but now they’re forced to collaborate again when Hathaway needs costumes for her attempt to revive her career. Most of the film reportedly happens in one place – a barn – and centers around the characters clashing, with only short glimpses of actual performances. Hunter Schafer has a small role, appearing for about ten minutes as the costume designer’s assistant.

Announced in March 2023, the project features writing and direction by Lowery. Hathaway and Coel were quickly cast as the main stars, and Hunter Schafer joined them in May. FKA Twigs’ participation was announced in March 2024. Filming started in Germany in May 2023 and was able to continue even during the 2023 SAG-AFTRA strike. Hathaway later confirmed that filming finished on July 20, 2024.

Initial reactions to the film have been mixed, with some viewers finding it confusing and lacking substance. Even the director, David Lowery, admitted at the 2024 Melbourne International Film Festival that it was a very strange and unusual movie, and seemed unsure about it himself.

Audiences can look forward to seeing director Lowery’s take on “Mother Mary” when it comes out in April 2026. Featuring Anne Hathaway, Michaela Coel, and Hunter Schafer, along with an original soundtrack, the film is shaping up to be one of A24’s most anticipated releases.
