It seems like Netflix is constantly changing its rules, making it more difficult to enjoy shows and movies. They’ve repeatedly taken away features they used to allow, like password sharing and the number of profiles or devices you can use. Now, according to The Verge, Netflix has quietly stopped letting users cast content from their phones to TVs, except with older Chromecast models. This latest change is particularly puzzling.
Netflix recently changed how people watch shows on TVs. According to a report by Android Authority, the streaming service no longer lets users cast content from their phones or tablets to most TVs. Instead, Netflix now asks users to use the Netflix app directly on their TV using the remote. One Reddit user noticed this change on November 10th and said it happened without any prior notice.
It seems like users with older Chromecast devices or TVs that already have Google Cast built-in need a premium, ad-free subscription to cast YouTube videos. This costs at least $17.99 a month. If you’re using the ad-supported version of YouTube, you won’t be able to cast.
The biggest mystery surrounding Netflix’s decision (which they don’t explain) is the reason behind it. It could be that the feature wasn’t popular enough to justify the cost of maintaining it. Or, similar to when they removed AirPlay support in 2019, it might be related to their standards for video quality. Whatever the reason, Netflix used to be known for being incredibly easy to use, but lately, it feels like they’re moving away from that and becoming more like their old DVD-by-mail service.
